Campus Celebrity: Blaire Hirt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

What year are you (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior)?

Sophomore

Why did you decide to go to USFSP?

I decided on USFSP after the tour of the beautiful campus. I scheduled the tour of St. Pete and Tampa in the same day and my mom and I never made it to Tampa because I knew I was set on St. Pete. Also, my mom is a graduate of USF so she helped guide me into becoming a Bull.

What’s your major?

My major is Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, and my two concentrations are Psychology and Social Work

What’s your favorite thing about our campus?

I love how peaceful it is and how at home I feel when I walk around and interact with the faculty and staff. Even though home for me is four hours away, I never feel too far from my at home feeling.

What’s your favorite thing to do on campus?

I love working, I know that sounds crazy but I work in the Chancellor’s office with amazing people who only want the best for the students and campus. I also love to sit outside by the Bay and watch the dolphins peaking out or the boats floating by.

What do you do when not at school (extra- curricular activities/jobs…etc)?

Well I work two jobs, one as the receptionist in the Chancellor’s office and the other as a Third grade religious school teacher. I am the president of the Hillel on campus. I enjoy going to the gym on campus and walking around downtown and by the water. Baking is my stress reliever from all the crazy school work and life hurdles.

What’s a quote you live by?

Everything happens for a reason

If you could have a superpower which would you pick?

I would have the power to heal people. Since I am a Social Work major I have a passion for helping people, especially children. My future dream job is to be a family counselor in schools so having the power to emotionally and physically heal people would make my job a lot easier.

Backstreet Boys or *Nsync?

I loved both! I actually liked 98 degrees, same kind of boy band, and when I would ask my mom to play the CD she would say “Why do you want 98 degrees, that’s way to hot!”

What’s the Hillel Club about/do?

The Hillel club is a Jewish club that started recently here on campus. I helped get it started last year and last fall we became active around campus. This club isn’t just for Jewish teens, anyone can join the club and I believe the more the merrier. As the president I am focusing more on the cultural aspect of being Jewish, which entails mainly the major events and the fun things about the Jewish culture. We celebrate the holidays in fun and exciting ways. We get faculty and staff involved in order to make the club a community type of engagement as well. I hope to continue to grow the club and hopefully when I graduate it will have standing traditions and great leaders to take over.

How did it get started?

Hillel started by a now graduated student who invited me to a sunset cruise trip around the Bay for Havdalah, a Jewish service on Saturday nights. On the boat was the Hillel director for all the college campus’ in our area, Rabbi Ed, who explained to us the process to get a club started here. We didn’t have a lot of people interested at first so I volunteered to be the Vice President. After the past President graduated it was left up to me to take over.

Any upcoming events you guys will be at or hosting?

There is a holiday coming up in February called Tu Bishvat, which celebrates trees and agriculture. I will be working on getting an event together for our campus to get involved in and possibly work with our garden club since they are the experts with planting. Look out for more events coming up because we are always trying new things!
