MUSIC MONDAY: Full Ride Music Group presents Gurl Code

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Released recently on Oct. 22, the all female compilation album Gurl Code is just what hip hop – more specifically Christian hip hop – needed. Christian rapper, This’l didn’t think female emcees were getting enough attention in the hip hop world so he did something about it. Being a female emcee in hip hop can provide many barriers to getting your name out there. The fact that Christian hip hop is still a young genre definitely makes it harder.

When a person thinks about hip hop or rap, very rarely does he/she think of women artists. With this album, This’l hopes to shine the light on these diamonds in the rough all while giving all the glory to the Lord. Being a woman who mainly listens to Christian hip hop, I really felt the absence of women in the genre, unless a woman was featured in a track. I was extremely excited when I heard about this project and patiently waited for its release. All the messages are powerful and amazing. I give it two thumbs up!

If you don’t have it, get this album now! It will fill you with uplifting words and encouragement.
