Judo Fighter: Natzui Martinez

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

You know when they say you can only be good at one thing, but there always comes a person that breaks the stereotype? Natzui, starting with his name, breaks all stereotype that has ever been said. Not only is he great at Mixed Martial Arts, he’ also a musician and a great human being. Truly a kind, mysterious guy.  Who wouldn’t love having someone around who can truly protect you, while dedicating a beautiful song to you? With great pleasure, I give you this week’s campus cutie.

Name: Natzui  Martinez

Age: 22

Hometown: El Yunque (as he calls it)

Major: Management

Classification: Transfer Student (would be his 5th year)

Rekationship Status: Single

Nickname: Zuix, Stich, and Joker

1. HCUPR: For starters, you have a very intriguing name. What’s the story behind it?

Natzui: Well my grandfather was called Luis, and so is my father. My mom told my dad that if my name was Luis, she’d divorce him. It’s funny. And they chose Natzui because of its japanese meaning. It means “well full of summer water”. It is also the name ofthe first Japanese world champion in Judo. And the fact that I have Japanese descendence.

2. HCUPR: So you have a musical side, tell us about it.

Natzui: I had to switch schools when I was in elementary, so I was enrolled in “La Escuela Libre de Música” in San Juan. There I started playing the accordion and percussion intsruments.

3. HCUPR: You also have a sporty side.

Natzui: My father is Luis Martinez, who was an abanderado in 92, he has also participated in the Centroamericanos, and he’s a hall of famer. And to make it funnier, he was also my judo teacher. It has always been a part of who I am.

4.  HCUPR: Do you happen to have a favorite superhero?

Natzui: It’s actually a villain: the Joker.  I love how he is portrayed. And yes, my favorite is the Anarchist.

5. HCUPR: What is your ideal partner + ideal date?

Naztui: My ideal partner is someone that demonstrates how much she truly cares about me, the same way I do about her. I’m kind of a mix between 21st century and the romanticism era. My ideal date would be eating sushi and drinking wine being in the beach, with some candles.

6. HCUPR: Tell us about your mother:

Natzui: My mom is great.  She’s been together with her partner for 16 years now. After my parents got divorced, she realized what she truly wanted. And I’m very happy of the fact that I have two mothers instead of one.

7. HCUPR: I remember you told me how much you liked Naturales, how come you didn’t apply there?

Natzui: It’s not specifically Naturales, it’s the Philosophy major.  It’s amazing.  Unfortunately I could only become a teacher if I studied Philosophy, so instead I decided to go with the second thing I like: Gerencia.

8. HCUPR: what other things you do apart from Judo, and music?

Natzui: I’ve been working in promotions ever since I was 16. Maybe you’ve heard of IKONIX. I manage other promoters now. For example, we’re getting gigs from parties all the time. Also, have you guys noticed the cat in the pictures? That’s me.

9. HCUPR: Describe yourself in 3 words:

Natzui: extrovert, amiable, analytical.
