Selfies Banned from University Graduation Ceremony

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

Selfies have been a big part of today’s culture since social networking started. They are all over Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Tumblr and many other sites. They aren’t just taken by everyday people. Celebrities take them too, and just recently Vice President Joe Biden took his first one.

Selfies taken at graduation ceremonies have gone viral on the internet. Although they are very popular, one school has decided to ban selfies at its graduation ceremony. The administration at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island has decided that selfies will not be allowed at the school’s graduation ceremony while students are accepting their diplomas. Officials worry that students doing so will make the graduation ceremony longer than necessary.

Ronald Machtley, the university’s president said supports the ban and said, “There’s a fairly short time that the photographer can snap and if they’re holding up their (camera) taking a picture of us, that could be the photo that their parents get.” Students will still be able to share their graduation experiences on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #bryangrad2014.
