How to Live a Life of Low-Cost Luxury

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

As a college student, we all have very little money to spend, or we would like to save as much of it as possible. Some may think that you have to sacrifice life’s little pleasures in order to save money, but I’m here to tell you otherwise.

There are many ways you can save money as a student if you just do your research and look in the right places!

For the girl who loves a good salon day.

Okay, so realistically you should get your haircut every six weeks, but who actually does that? When cut and styles start at $45 at a salon, who can afford it? Don’t forget about keeping up with mani/pedis. That’s easily another $30 and $40 dollars. Looking at those numbers just makes me shiver.

If you have some time to spare and you’re not doing anything too extreme to your hair, I highly suggest visiting your local beauty school. Students are required to have so many hours, but since students are doing the work that means the work is highly discounted. If having a student cutting or dying your hair scares you a little bit, be sure to ask for a more experienced student when booking an appointment. Also keep in mind that they’re always under the watchful eye of their teachers, so fear not! At most beauty schools, you can also get massages, mani/pedis and facials!

For the world traveler.

Are you itching to go on your next destination trip? Or trying to plan a spring break that won’t break the bank?

For flights, look into websites and apps that give great student discounts like Student Universe and JustFly. Or look into apps that let you know when the best time to buy plane tickets will be, like Hopper.

Instead of booking a ridiculously over-priced hotel, check out AirBnb! You get to meet really cool people and if you prefer, you can look for entire apartments to rent out to yourself without dropping a ton of money. This also helps save you from spending money at restaurants because you can utilize the kitchen in most places!

For the shopaholic.

I know it’s always a must to have the latest thing on trend, but it’s even hard to shop at places like Forever21 and H&M where items are cheaply made and still overpriced. Shopping at secondhand stores don’t always give you the best options either. So, what’s a girl to do?

Shopping for name brand clothing and accessories on Ebay is a must. There are so many things that people sell that they haven’t even worn and that are still totally relevant. My friend just bought this gorgeous J.Crew blouse for $5 off Ebay! Crazy, right? Don’t knock it till you try it!

These are just some of the many ways that you can save a pretty penny as a student, don’t stop here though! Always ask if places offer student discounts and keep your student ID handy. You never know what it can get you!
