Psssst! Dry Shampoo: Fail or Holy Grail?

I wholeheartedly believe in going days between washing your hair. Even when you’re using gentle shampoos, washing your hair’s natural oils out on a daily basis can make it dry, sad, and unmanageable. I discovered dry shampoo during my senior year of high school, and I haven’t looked back since. As a junior in college, I don’t have a lot of free time, and I don’t want to spend too much of that precious time washing, drying, and styling my hair…That’s where Psssst! dry shampoo comes in.

Here’s a travel-sized can posing on the back of my toilet. Très chic.

I tested out the Tropical scent in a cute, travel-friendly can, over Spring Break. I didn’t go anywhere at all (much less anywhere that required air travel) but this size can is airplane-approved, so I would have been covered to keep skipping washes if I’d gone somewhere.

I was surprised at how powerful the spray from this tiny can was. Travel-sized products usually aren’t as great in terms of packaging as their larger relatives, but this was serious. I spritzed a little bit to see how it smelled — totally tropical, by the way — and it sprayed just as far as a regular-sized bottle would have.

Now, on to the product’s performance: I was pretty impressed.

Especially since I’ve been skipping wash days for years now, my hair doesn’t get greasy unless I sweat or wear a hat for a while. I think it’s extra gross to sweat (like, exercise sweat) and then skip real shampoo, so I did yoga while I was testing this out instead of my usual HIIT and cardio…A.K.A., I wasn’t sweating.

I went my usual two days without a wash, and tried this dry shampoo out on the third day. It smelled awesome, soaked up the little bit of oil that had shown up around my roots, and brought my hair back to life.

The following day (day four with no washes!) was just as great. I actually ended up wearing my hair in a ponytail on this day, though, so I can’t say whether it would have looked good down or not. I’d slept really well the night before and had too many wild spots to try and tame before I left for class, so I went with the ponytail. My roots were revitalized after a second round with this stuff.

Day five was, unfortunately, the end for me. It rained, and I was unprepared. When my hair gets wet, even around my hairline, the only way to keep those hairs from springing into the curls that are my natural texture is to blow-dry them. Oddly enough, I didn’t have a hairdryer with me on campus, so my baby hairs curled up and the rest of my hair was straight. Ew. When I got home that evening, I finally washed my hair.

Overall, I was impressed by the power of this little can. It’s cruelty-free, which was an added bonus for me. My hair was clean and awesome, without the bad karma of animal testing.
