Reasons Why The Office Is so Addicting

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

The Office is a legendary pastime, favorite TV show and even obsession for many. It is jampacked with amusing situations and around 20 oddball, yet completely ordinary characters.

Here are some reasons why the common Netflix guru might just fall in love with The Office…

The Insanely Awkward Moments

MIchael’s constant urge to get in the middle of Jim and Pam’s relationship. Dwight’s bravery, i.e. attacking Roy with pepper spray. Toby’s undying obsession with Pam. Andy attempting to run over Dwight with his Prius. Michael’s invasive personal questions and sexual comments. Dwight’s cousin Mose Schrute (can always be found at Schrute Farms).

Pam’s Newfound Confidence

At the beginning of this beloved TV show, Pam was a bit insecure as she found her footing in the office. Pam makes a turnaround however and learns to stand up for herself and her coworkers, take more risks and enjoy life a little more. I think we can all agree that Pam is one of the more normal-seeming characters so we enjoy watching her grow and take on a new bold personality.

Dwight’s Many Roles

Schrute Boys. Jim’s hater. Caretaker of Schrute farms (and Mose of course). An awful mentor to Ryan. Angela’s D (and she is his “Monkey”). Faithful follower of Michael Scott. There is no good way to describe Dwight for those who have not seen the Office but I can sum him up as the highlight of the show and epitome of awkwardness at Dunder Mifflin.

“I am very excited. Ryan hasn’t made a sale yet. But more importantly, he hasn’t made an ally yet. Is he going to be a slacker/loser/wiseass like Jim was, or is he going to join the Dwight Army of Champions?” – Dwight Schrute

Michael Scott’s Neverending Ego

IT IS RIDICULOUS. Oftentimes, I find myself wondering how on earth someone could be this egotistical. That is the fun of watching. Michael’s ability to make everything about himself is uncomparable. He must have all the credit and all eyes must be on him, whether it is good or bad (which 9 out of 10 times- it is bad).

Surprise element

Each character is unique in their own specific way. I find myself taken aback as they learn new peculiar traits about the characters in the TV show. Stanley’s blunt, savage comments mixed with Andy Bernard’s obsession with his alma mater Cornell and uncalled for acapella moments is one small example of shockingly different attributes.

Jim and Pam are meant to be

Not to mention, Jim and Pam! That is the beauty of The Office. Not only are you experiencing a full on comedic rollercoaster, but also a romantic drama simultaneously. Their obvious teenager-like crushes on each other started from season one. Watching them bond over pranks on Dwight, missing one another when Jim was away at corporate, and eventually putting the pieces together; their love interest is captivating for all who watch.
