Football Fashonista

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

You’re asked to go to a football game, next thing you know you’re throwing on some jeans, a hat and a jersey, grabbing the foam finger and running out the door. If this football game is at an SEC school, you may want to rethink your wardrobe choice. For those of you unfamiliar to UK athletics, the University of Kentucky is a part of the SEC (South Eastern Conference), and in the south, we are big on tradition. Traditions at UK are a whole other subject that we won’t get into in this article, but one tradition, for girls at least, is the “Southern Belle” look. I know what you’re thinking, pageants, flowing blonde hair, and a southern drawl; but that’s not quite it. One thing a true southern belle does is always looks her best, so in the SEC, that’s what the girls do.

The quickest way to pick out a newcomer to Commonwealth Stadium during a football game, especially a freshman, is to spot a girl wearing a blue tee and jeans, sporting a UK hat. Nothing is wrong with any of those things and they’re certainly appropriate for basketball season, but this is football season. Football season (in fashion and literally) is a completely different ball game. The norm in the student section is dressy but comfortable.

For guys this can be khaki or colored pants, a button up, and a tie with dress shoes or Sperry’s.

For a girl, this is an opportunity to hit the mall and raid the stores for the latest trends in blue and white.

Blue sundresses with belts are a huge hit, as are blue or white skirts with a dressy top. As the games get chillier we move into blue and white sweaters with jeggings, leggings, or skinny’s. Boots and strappy sandals seem to be favorites as well as your favorite Kentucky blue jewelry.

Our first home game I wore a blue Hollister sundress with a white belt, white strappy sandals, UK necklace, earrings and a bracelet, with sapphire rings and a bracelet. Game two, I rocked a blue mini skirt from Charlotte Russe, a white top with blue sequin sleeves from PINK and blue and white accessories.

For a day game you don’t want to forget your sunglasses, otherwise you may be partially blind by the time you leave. Another accessory to consider is your bag, you don’t want to lug around a huge purse, but you need things like money, keys, lip balm, and a camera. I have found that clutches and over the shoulder bags seem to be a favorite among UK girls. If you’re ever in doubt on an outfit choice on game day, you can’t go wrong with skinny jeans, a blue or white V-neck, a cardigan, and some comfy shoes (the student section stands at all times, so be prepared!).

The mall is having tons of sales right now and I know I have seen lots of blue and white clothing items lately, so now’s your chance to stock up on football attire!

Now that you’re a member of Big Blue Nation (BBN), you’re also a member of another BBN: Beautiful Blue Nation. From tailgating, to game time, to post-game activities, make sure your outfit is a touchdown! So lets dress up, stand up, and cheer the Cats to a victory this weekend!
