This week’s musical musing occurred ironically enough as I was “hurrying” to catch the train to school. Irritable and short of breath, the resounding “hurry, hurry” of Air Traffic Controller’s Dave Munro satirically accompanied my rush. The peppy, proverb-laced track caught me off guard as I realized how well the lyrics mesh with our mundane yet insane routines.

Over the march of static drum beats and synth bumps and blares, Dave sings, “Ooh I’m gonna miss something as I keep bumping the most significant stuff.” Continuing to project the blur that is our everyday race against the clock, he contemplates: “I hurry through these crowded streets, and I hurry through the food I eat. I hurry when it’s time to learn, and why, how many good people have I burned?”
As I listened to the song again more contemplatively, I concluded that his words essentially echo how I live much of my life. Although instantly unnerved at the thought, I knew I was not alone in darting from deadline to deadline. Unfortunately, I think this mentality dominates an overwhelming majority of society. As college students especially, we juggle homework, meetings, work, activities, “attempted exercise”, friends, family and hopefully, fun! Trapped within the demands and due dates that guide our lives, we hustle through the week, often missing the smallest and sweetest joys.
The song reflects this with an introspective warning: “I ignore the signs as I’m running out of time.” If we refrain from slowing down, constantly surrendering to each day’s sprint, we are sure to overlook the obvious sources of happiness.
So, please, let the track reroute your outlook this week, and breathe, taking comfort in all the beauty present in our lives.
