Bonnie Gentry is an English major, but when she first started college she was an accounting major. “I knew I was horrible with math but I wanted to give it a shot because of the demand for accounting professionals.” She explains later on she realized that accounting was not for her. She pursued English because it was always her favorite subject in school. English in college is a lot different from what she experienced in school but has been happy with what she has chosen.

After graduation, Bonnie plans to work for a non-profit organization. She is still unsure what position she wants hold. She plans to get real work experience to help her lead her to the direction that best suits her.

Bonnie is a resident committee member for her building in which they address building and neighborhood problems. She lives in Pilsen, which is known for its economic challenges as well as high crime rates. She says, “I enjoy taking an active part in making the area safer.”

She also volunteers at her daughter’s Head Start School. She says, “I read to the kids and assist and tutor the teachers with their college level writing assignments.” She says she is happy to help the teachers out who all are currently in the process of earning their degrees.

She has an internship position set up in social media at her daughter’s Head Start School for spring semester. She says, “The school is a non-profit organization so I am really excited to have the opportunity to intern there.”

Even with all of this on her plate, she is still able to balance between schoolwork and time with the family. “As a mom and a student, I find it tough to balance both worlds. My social life is non-existent, but I am content.” This super mom always makes sure to save time each day for the family and try to plan something for the whole family on weekends no matter what. She always makes sure to get her schoolwork done as well. “It’s a juggle but I make it work!”
