Why You Should Vote

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Election Year Has Passed, But You Should Still Vote!

Everyone knows you should vote in the general election. Beginning months in advance, you are bombarded with commercials, emails, phone calls, Facebook posts, and more. Everyone knows who the President of the United States is. But do you know who your local representative is? Local elections are important too. Here’s why:

1. Your vote counts more.

Although voting in the general election is important, your vote carries much more weight in local elections. Only a small percentage of the population votes at all. That percentage shrinks considerably when you talk about state elections. So, each person who votes plays a strong role in the election.

2. State officials have a big impact on your life.

Yes, the Presidency of the United States is the most powerful political position in the world. However, you shouldn’t overlook the influence of state representatives. They are much more likely to make decisions that directly impact you. The issues they decide upon-education, transportation, state laws-are more relevant to the average citizen than many (but not all!) national issues.

3. To give Collegiettes a voice!

The majority of young people don’t make the effort to get out and vote. Because of this, many legislators ignore issues that are important to us. They don’t have to pay attention to what we want, because we don’t pay enough attention to what they are doing. We need to use our votes to show them that our opinions matter.

4. It’s not as complicated as it seems.

There are places all around town to vote. Not registered to vote? No problem.
