‘Riverdale’: Your Next TV Obsession

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

With popular shows such as The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars ending this year, what will be our next TV obsession? Welcome to Riverdale, which is the home of the Archie Comics characters with a dark spin to the familiar comic series. Though Riverdale only came out in January, it has come to be an phenomenal hit that CW has just renewed for another season. So, why aren’t you watching Riverdale? Here are five reasons why you showed by tuning into (or streaming) TV’s newest obsession.

1. Cole Sprouse is back on television

After taking an 8-year hiatus from TV, Cole Sprouse has returned to the small screen. He portrays Jughead Jones, the narrator of the show and Archie Andrews’ best friend. I am personally excited to see Cole Sprouse back on TV, and he has decided to play a dark character versus the nerdy loveable guy we are used to seeing him play on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.

2. Feminist power

There’s no secret that the girls run Riverdale. Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge ( Camila Mendes), Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), and Josie ( Ashleigh Murray) are all excellent dynamic characters in Riverdale. So far in the series, you do not see Veronica and Betty fighting it out to see who will win Archie’s heart, but you do see this dynamic duo fighting slut-shaming, which I think deserves a round of applause.

3. Diversity is very prominent

Diverse characters are an important aspect of television these days and Riverdale is no exception to the rule. They have taken it on their hands to make Josie and the Pussycats a black all-girl group that is prominent on Riverdale’s music scene. The show also features Kevin, an openly gay student at Riverdale High School who is shown as a friend of Betty and Veronica. They did an excellent job making the comics diverse, and I’m glad they decided to do the same thing in the show.

4. A new teen mystery drama to be entangled in

I don’t know about you all, but I love teen mystery dramas just as the next person does and Riverdale craves my satisfaction. The show is centered around the murder mystery of Cheryl Blossom’s twin brother Jason Blossom and trying to figure out who is the killer. Along with that, the show features a student-teacher relationship, strained family ties, and secrets all around that need to be answered. Before you know it, you’re wrapped up wondering what’s about to happen next.

5. Such relatable characters

Even with all the secrets and mystery of Riverdale going on, there are so many characters that people can relate to. Archie’s struggle to follow his true passion, Betty wanting freedom from her overprotecting parents, Veronica trying to break down the image she left at her last high school, and Josie wanting to impress her father. The issues that characters face in “Riverdale” are issues we all can relate to in one way or another, which makes the show even better.

Get your TV ready, they’re expecting you in Riverdale…
