Hey, April’s Got Holidays, Too!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Most UF students have their April meticulously planned out – the first two weeks are spent frantically initiating the crunch before finals, and the second two weeks are full of cram sessions for end-of-semester exams.

We’re here to save your sanity – the month doesn’t have to be completely lame. April is actually full of reasons to put down the books and take a break… by celebrating a holiday.

Skeptical? Well, did you know that April is Couple Appreciation Month? Or that
April 3-9 is the week of the ocean? There’s so many fun events to celebrate it can be hard to keep them organized.

Here’s the Her Campus holiday calendar for April (minus April Fools, hope you pranked). Cut yourself some academic slack and have fun!

April 5: TOMS’ One Day Without Shoes. This day encourages you to skip the sneakers and go barefoot in order see (feel) what its like for underprivileged children to go without shoes. Be careful!

April 7: No Housework Day. This one’s easy – don’t do anything cleaning-related. If you cook dinner, leave the dishes until tomorrow. Revel in your instant gratification.

April 10: National Sibling Day. Visit or Skype your siblings and tell them how much you appreciate them.

April 12: Drop Everything And Read Day.
Remember this program from elementary school? Celebrate it years later, but in a better way – make your bed with pillows and blankets, grab a soda, and crack open the book you’ve been dying to read.

April 15: McDonald’s Day.
How can you resist those $1 sundaes? Treat yourself!

April 16: Record Store Day.
Devoted to ensuring the importance of record stores to the music industry, this holiday encourages independent stores to hold events. Many artists – like Death Cab For Cutie, Kings of Leon and Lady Gaga – will release special record editions of their music. In Gainesville, Hear Again Music and Movies, Tonevendor and Wayward Council are all participating, so call/visit them to see if they’re holding any promotions.

April 20: National Karaoke Week is April 17-23. Turn up the mic, gather friends and sing along to silly songs (we recommend Spice Girls’ “Wanna Be”).

April 23: Talk Like Shakespeare Day.
Pick a play and a park and perform with your friends!

April 26: OK we invented this one – Make Something Delicious With Discount Candy Day. Easter candy will probably go on clearance at Target and other grocery stores, so buy a bag of Cadbury eggs and bake these Cadbury Egg Chocolate Cookies. They’re cute and yummy!

April 28: Poem in Your Pocket Day. Whether your favorite poet is Shel Silverstein or Edgar Allen Poe, use this day as an opportunity to discuss poetry. Meet your friends for lunch and have each person read their poem out loud. Then see who can write the funniest haikus (5-7-5 syllables)!

April 30: Penguin Day. Order some temporary tattoos and put them on while watching Happy Feet.

Hola! My name is Victoria and it is a pleasure to meet you. I was born and raised in Key West, Fla. Surprisingly; people do actually live there. I'm a fourth year journalism student at the University of Florida, and I am obsessed with food. I watch ungodly amounts of the Food Network. I love to dance, write and swim to my hearts content. I don't know what I would do without my Crackberry and listening to the Silversun Pickups makes me sane.
