How to Throw the Perfect Friendsgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

As if Thanksgiving wasn’t enough of an excuse to eat to your heart’s content, Friendsgiving is yet, another exception. Thanksgiving Day is usually reserved for family, but what about the family you created on your own? Friendsgiving is the perfect opportunity to take some time to appreciate the wonderful group of girls you surround yourself with. Here are some suggestions to ensure your Friendsgiving is a major hit. Afterall, what better way to bond with your girls than with a large helping of mashed potatoes?

1)   Plan in Advance: Friendsgiving usually takes place a few days before or after Thanksgiving. While this occasion doesn’t need to be extremely extravagant, you do want to give yourself at least a week to plan everything out. To make your life easier, consider having dinner potluck style and divide the dishes among your friends. Remember that this doesn’t have to be traditional, so if you’d rather avoid burning your apartment down while attempting to cook a whole turkey, don’t stress and just order a pizza.

2)   Make a Guest List: An easy way to amp up the occasion’s cute factor is by delivering invitations to your friends. Sure, you could easily create an event through Facebook or send a group message from your phone, but actual cards are more meaningful. However, if you’re strapped for time, Punchbowl allows you to create digital e-vites for all your Friendsgiving needs.

3)   Décor: Time to spruce up your humble abode! Or at least your dinner table. These gold leaf placecards add some elegance without being over the top. Here are a few more DIY suggestions to liven up your dining area.

4)   Music playlist: A special occasion isn’t complete without music. Look no further because Spotify has a playlist especially for Friendsgiving! Or you can always second as hostess and dj by creating your own playlist.

5)   Gratitude Game: Grab a mason jar, some paper and pens because it’s time to give thanks. Have your friends write down what they’re thankful for. Keep it anonymous! When dinner is over, pull out the notes from the jar and guess who wrote each one. (Yes, chocolate is an acceptable answer).

6)   Goodie Bags: End the night by handing out goodie bags to each of your guests—just a little something to thank them not only for coming to your party, but for being the amazing individuals that they are. Your lovely dinner might be over, but your girls are forever. (aww!)
