“Homemade” Mother’s Day Ideas (No Mod Podge Required)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

With midterm (and day-partying) season in full swing, it’s a forgivable offense to have put off buying—or even thinking about buying—a mother’s day gift for Mommy Dearest.  Mom’s day is fast approaching, however, and time is quickly running out.  Unfortunately, the available amount of affordable options is not exactly bountiful thanks to the unhealthy amount of post-dayger Freebirds purchases and online shopping sprees we have shamefully managed to rack up this quarter, draining a good portion of our bank accounts.  Here are some thoughtful, homegrown ideas that wont dry out your bank account (no tacky arts and crafts projects though, don’t worry) to give Mom the type of gift she deserves.

For the mom who is overworked…

Plan a girls’ night in for the two of you! Pick up a few face masks, order a pizza, and rent her favorite movie on pay-per-view.  If you possess the artistic abilities to give a decent manicure, then paint her nails for her—consider it partial retribution for the years she spent changing your dirty diapers.

For the mom who is always doing everything for everyone else…

Wake up before she does, and cook her a big, decadent meal of pancakes, waffles, omelettes—whatever she likes best.  Then, surprise her by bringing it to her in bed.

For the stay-at-home mom…

Relieve her from her motherly duties for a night.  Hire a babysitter for your younger siblings and make dinner reservations or buy tickets to a movie for her and your dad.

For the busy mom…

Help her stay on top of her busy life by organizing her desk, tidying her closet, making her bed, and doing her laundry.  After all, it’s about time you put those housekeeping skills you’ve recently acquired from living on your own to good use.

For the working mom…

Have flowers and a box of chocolates delivered to her office.  The gesture – and the sugar rush—is sure to make her day at work a little bit better.

For the social mom…

Throw her a little party! Prepare a cheese and crackers spread, make a few drinks, and invite 10 of her closest friends over for appetizers and cocktails.

For the outdoors-y mom…

Take her on a hike.  Not only will you both get some good cardio in, but it will give you guys the chance to talk and catch up with each other at the same time.

For the mom who loves to cook…

Compile a recipe book of yours, your mother’s, and your grandmother’s best recipes for a sentimental gift your mom is sure to eat up!

No matter what you choose to do for your mother, just remember that the best gift you can give her is your attention.  And why wouldn’t you want to?  She might even end up giving you a little something– wisdom, guidance, or maybe just some good old-fashion motherly love that no one ever really “grows out of”.
