Most of us are not makeup artists, estheticians or beauty gurus, so it can be hard to identify mistakes we are making during our day-to-day beauty routine. However it is important to start taking care of our skin from a young age in order to prevent signs of premature aging.

Here are some beauty no-nos to avoid during your daily ritual beauty routine…

1. Not washing your makeup brushes.

Not washing your makeup brushes is a huge no-no. Your makeup brushes collect dead skin, excess dust, bacteria and even the extra hair products that are left in the air, as well as oil (especially after touch ups throughout the day). This can all cause unwanted breakouts!

Applying makeup with dirty brushes can also lead to brushing dirty gunk back and forth from your face and into the product. This can spoil the product and cause a shorter shelf life. It is recommended to wash your brushes every two-weeks or twice a month. Washing your makeup brushes also helps pro-long their shelf life and prevent shedding. Many cosmetic stores carry a selection of cleansing products especially formulated for makeup brushes to help you get started.

2. Popping pimples.

I know, I know… Sometimes it’s hard to hold back from popping that big zit that just appeared on your face out of nowhere – but stay strong!

Pimples are basically filled up with oil, debris and bacteria. When you pop a pimple, bacteria can splatter in other areas of the face, sink into those pores and cause even more acne. Popping them can also lead to scarring, which in the long run may be worse than just that little pimple.

3. Falling asleep with your makeup on.

After getting home from a long night you might just feel too lazy to take off your makeup and want to go straight into bed … (sigh)! Unfortunately, falling asleep with your makeup on is one of the worst things that you can do to your skin.

The build-up of makeup, dirt & oil can clog pores, which can result in new breakouts. During the day our skin also faces many environmental stressor like pollution, which can lead to signs of premature aging. Naturally, during our sleep our skin goes through a healing process that can be interrupted when sleeping with a dirty face. For this reason it is important to cleanse and moisturize day and night in order to keep our skin looking nice, and forever young!

Avoid using body soap bars to cleanse your face! Ingredients can strip the skin, cause dryness and tightness. Instead choose from a variety of face washes formulated for cleansing the face.

4. Failing to moisturize.

Moisturizing is essential for healthy skin, no matter what type of skin you have. Even if you’re oily! Oily skin produces extra oil due to the skin’s lack of hydration. Moisturizing helps maintain a water-oil balance, which in return helps minimize the amount of excess oil your skin produces throughout the day.

Avoid using body lotions on the face. The skin on our body is thicker so body lotions tend to be heavier and therefore can clog the pores on our face.

5. Over exfoliating.

Exfoliating is awesome! Especially when your exfoliator has cool little beads that give your face a clean tingling sensation – so it’s hard to believe that there is such thing as over exfoliating when it feels, oh-so-good! But unfortunately there is. Exfoliators should be used two to three times a week or every other day. Over exfoliating can cause irritation, redness, excessive dryness and tightening of the skin.

So make sure to have a gentle daily facial cleanser for those extra four-five days you’re not exfoliating.

6. Leaving your mask on for too long.

Facemasks are key to great skin. They help detoxify the skin, even out the skin tone and minimize the appearance of pores. But it is important to read the instructions.

Overusing facemasks or leaving them on for longer periods than recommended can cause dryness, increase the appearance of lines, strip the skin of necessary oils, cause irritation and increase redness or acne.

7. Not using a primer.

Ever wondered why your makeup doesn’t even make it halfway throughout the day? It could be because you’re not wearing a primer and primers are key to prolonging the wear of makeup!

Eye Primers are different from face primers. Due to the skin in our eyes being thinner, eye primers have a thicker consistency to help smooth out the canvas of our eyes to prevent creasing and enhance eye shadows vibrance. In contrast face primers have a thinner consistency to help smooth out the appearance of pores and lines for a smoother makeup application and longer wear.
