There are so many silly restrictions and bans on having things like microwaves or dogs on college campuses, yet very few restrictions on guns. I don’t understand why I’m not allowed to have a microwave to warm up some food, but I am allowed to have a gun. I know we have the right to bare arms, but schools already take away our First Amendment by controlling the school newspapers so why not take our Second Amendment instead and actually keep us safe. Microwaves might be a fire hazard, but guns are a death hazard.
With the increasing amount of school shootings, the last thing we should allow on campuses are guns. This year, guns will surpass car accidents as the leading cause of death among young people. Young people are disproportionately affected by gun violence, yet most feel silenced on the issue.
Colleges should be the safest places in America and guns on campus will not make students feel safe. That’s why DoSomething.Org is working on banning guns on college campus with their #GunsOut campaign.
To get involved take a picture of yourself flexing and tweet it to your school’s President saying “These are the only guns I want on campus” and urge them to sign this official letter (dosomething.org/letter).
Bills are being proposed in 15 states this month alone that would allow concealed carry on campus. We need to do something about this before it’s too late!
