SNL’s Spinoff Show and Best Moments of Weekend Update

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

It has recently been announced that Saturday Night Live’s longest-running recurring sketch, Weekend Update, is going primetime this summer. NBC has stated that Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update will be a weekly half-hour show that features anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che. The spinoff will consist of four episodes and will air on NBC. The first episode will air Thursday, August 10th at 9 pm.

This is extremely exciting for us SNL fans because we won’t have to wait so long in between seasons to get our dose of satire. Colin Jost and Michael Che do a fantastic job every episode. Although there were doubts in the beginning, they have proven themselves through there hilarious jokes and their on screen chemistry. I have no doubt in my mind that they will be able to hold their own for a half an hour show. We will also get to see some familiar faces as some of the SNL cast will be guest starring. To celebrate the great news, here are some of my favorite moments of Weekend Update in recent seasons.

1. Colin and Michael hilariously try to cheer up half of the country after the results of the 2016 election along with the fabulous Kate McKinnon as Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

2.  My new favorite guest to appear on Weekend Update is none other than Jeff Sessions who is also played by Kate McKinnon. I mean the ears are everything, and apparently decorative!

3. An underrated character that should appear as a guest more often is Cathy Anne played by the talented Cecily Strong. I am hoping that she will make an appearance on the spinoff because this character had me laughing line after line.

4. Every time Leslie Jones and Colin Jost interact with each other I never fail to laugh, but her rant on the minimum education of black history our nation receives after watching Hidden Figures left quite an impression on me. It even left me with an inspiring motto… push through boo!

5. This Weekend Update has got to be one of my favorites. Colin and Michael’s jokes were hilarious one after another. It also includes Leslie Jones discussing her dream of being a ninja and former cast member, Jay Pharoah, doing impressions of rappers. Drake even makes a little appearance and it was awesome to say the least.

6. David Ortiz, a retired baseball player, is played by Kenan Thompson and he always puts a smile on my face. All I have to say is that he is my ultimate spirit animal and although he has been a guest multiple times on Weekend Update I still want him to make more appearances.

7. Pete Davidson is back and better than ever after getting sober. His sarcasm is just on another level when giving his first impressions of the Trump administration. I hope he makes a few appearances in the spinoff.

8. My all time favorite recent Weekend Update is when Stefon returns. Stefon, played by Bill Hader, is an iconic character that everyone missed and he came back even funnier and weirder than ever.
