10 Reasons Why Long Distance Relationships Are Worth It

You and your boyfriend have been through everything together. He was the best prom date, and now he’s your best friend. Sorry to sound cheesy, but hey, you’re in love! Now that you go to different colleges, you can’t see him whenever you want. He’s hours away.

You’re already nervous enough about your first year of college. Not having your man by your side feels like your world is falling apart. Trust me, I know your struggle. During my freshman year at Davis, I was that girl. While making a long distance relationship work in college can seem impossible, it actually proved to be the best decision I ever made.

1.)  It is healthy to have a separate social life

Sure, you love listening to your boyfriend make all your best girlfriends laugh. The night Tamara coined the term BFGFBFF (Boyfriend Girlfriend Best Friends Forever Double Date) on MTV’s Awkward (it made Urban Dictionary!), your life was finally complete. But you’ll grow to enjoy having friends that aren’t all mutual.

With your boyfriend in a different area code, you don’t have to worry about his approval for every friend you meet. This goes for that one gal pal he worries is not a good influence on you or the friend he just can’t seem to get along with. Despite the stereotype that females are more emotional than males, we all know how jealous he can be. Separate colleges allow you to make guy friends without your boyfriend going crazy.

2.)  You’ll have more time to yourself

Although we love our boyfriends to death, we have to admit they take up a lot of our time. If they were at our school, they would be knocking on our door every second. Lucky for you, you will have time to go to Davis’s fabulous gym, read at the Arboretum, and catch up on all your shows that he hates.

3.)  You’ll be more outgoing

You’ve always wanted to rush for a sorority and you’re dying to apply to that cool job you saw on Aggie Job Link. Unfortunately, BFs can make us lazy. As soon he asks you to stay in for pizza and a movie, cross-country tryouts suddenly lose their appeal. But with your boyfriend keeping busy in his own environment, you will have that extra push to get involved in college.

4.)  Less distractions

With your BF’s dorm room in the building around the corner, that Wordsworth essay due tomorrow can seem insignificant. Trying to write an essay with your man candy kissing your neck can be quite the challenge. Use this time without your boyfriend to stay on top of your grades. You can probably get things done a lot faster.

5.)  FaceTime dates are perfect for those nights you don’t want to go out

While you love going out with your friends and borrowing each other’s clothes for themed frat parties, sometimes you just feel like staying in. Setting up a FaceTime date with your BF makes the perfect excuse to skip out on the party.

6.)  Seeing him gives you something to look forward to

Having a stressful week in college? Knowing that you get to see your boyfriend at the end of the month will help you keep moving forward. Plus, running to give him a hug and finally getting to be in his arms again is the best feeling in the world.

7.)  You appreciate each other even more

Missing each other is a good thing. It will make you realize how special your relationship really is. All the reasons you fell in love with him in the first place will come rushing back to you.

8.)  He’ll give great unbiased advice

Experiencing a falling out with your friend or a misunderstanding with your boss? Your BF is the perfect person to go to for advice because he can offer an outsider’s opinion.

9.)  Your roommates will wish they had a long distance boyfriend when they see the packages he sends you

All heads will be turning on your floor when you walk to your dorm with a huge package filled with all your favorite goodies. Don’t pretend you didn’t notice those admiring glances from your dorm buddies.

10.) It is fun to visit each other

Visiting each other’s colleges is one of the perfect ways to bond with your BF. You will both enjoy showing each other your new environments.
