The 20 Stages of Going to an Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

Hello HC Cuties! So now that spring quarter is almost over and most of us are counting down the days until summer arrives, we are faced with the reality of what we are going to do with our lives for the whole four months. Yes you heard me, FOUR MONTHS. For some that might sound like heaven but for other busybodies like me, going four whole months without having anything to do puts me at my wits’ end. Of course there’s a large variety of activities you could do such as summer school, backpacking through Europe, sleeping your way through life, etc. For most of us though, these summer months mean that in order to spend as little time at home as possible we need to get a job/internship/volunteering position and usually in order to get that, you need to be interviewed to make sure you’re a suitable candidate. I recently had my very first official interview and I’ve got to say, I don’t know how people feel so comfortable doing this on a regular basis. Here are some of the thoughts I had while preparing for my interview (about half of them are of me freaking out). Let me know in the comments below how you guys feel about interviews or how you deal with freaking out too!

PRE-INTERVIEW

1.  Hey I like this job/position/internship, I’m going to apply and see what happens

2. What?! I got an interview?!

3. OMG what am I going to wear?

4. Maybe I should worry more about what they’re going to ask me

5. *Googles violently every possible interview question they can possibly ask

6. *Practices for 5 minutes: I got this

DAY OF INTERVIEW

7. I need to do my hurr and make sure my makeup is on point

8. *Feels like a powerful businesswoman while wearing amazing interview outfit

9. *Sips on coffee and is carefree as if I already got the position

AN HOUR BEFORE INTERVIEW

10. I’m going to have a panic attack, why didn’t I practice more?!

11. *Practices answers to potential questions by talking to herself as she walks to interview

12. Now I remember why I never wear these damn shoes

13. *Practices smiling and sitting up straight and shaking hands like a freak

5 MINUTES BEFORE INTERVIEW

14. I am going to faint, why did I do this to myself?

15. *Gets called into interview room: Turns on charm like nobody’s business

POST-INTERVIEW

16. Wow I feel so much better now that it’s over! I totally kicked butt

17. OMG WHY DID I DO THAT AWKWARD THING? THEY’LL NEVER HIRE ME

WAITING FOR RESPONSE

18. *Forgets about it for a few weeks until receiving the news

19. YESSSS I GOT THE JOB

20. Why did I worry so much in the first place?

Happy interviewing, HC Cuties!
