Thoughts About the Super Bowl: Who Really Stole the Show?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

“What a game!” Patriots win Super Bowl LI 34-28. Up to the third quarter of the game Falcons were winning 28-9. Then, Patriots had a great comeback during the fourth quarter. At the end, they tied 28-28 which then they went overtime and Patriots won with a final touchdown. The Super Bowl, along with other sporting events, is truly symbolic as it tends to bring us all together.

Alright, let’s move on to the REAL reason most of us watched the game, it’s all about Lady Gaga! Photograph retrieved from: 102.7 KIIS FM

Many fans were expecting Lady Gaga to make an anti-Trump statement. She instead made a clear message of unity in her music. She started with singing “God Bless America” then transitioned into “This Land Is Your Land.” She concluded her first part by quoting from the Pledge of Allegiance, “One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Then, she of course performed her greatest hits: Poker Face, Born this Way, Telephone, Just Dance, and Bad Romance. While singing Born this Way, she made a clear message of acceptance by singing part of a verse towards the end of her song: “No matter gay, straight, or bi, Lesbian, transgendered life, I’m on the right track baby, I was born to survive. No matter black, white or beige Chola or orient made, I’m on the right track baby, I was born to be brave.”

She ended her performance by dropping her ‘mic, catching a football and jumping off the set onto the field. She is the one and only, Lady Gaga.

So, who did it better?

And, of course we could not forget about the commercials. AIRBND and 84 Lumber were two commercials that I saw that show support for immigrants. AIRBND, an online marketplace network enabling people to rent short-term lodging in residential properties, started a hashtag #WeAccept. Their message was clear; The world is more beautiful with the more you accept. This ad was a truly heartfelt message. Our world should not have borders we should all be able to go around the world and be yourself without fear of being discriminated. 84 Lumber, a company that offers quality building supplies, put out an ad about a mother and daughter’s journey leaving their country and migrating to the United States.
