Why It’s Rewarding to Work Hard

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

A lot of us love shortcuts, ways to get from here to there in the shortest effort possible but is that really fruitful? Is that really what makes anyone feel fulfilled at the end of the day?

I believe not. As of this past few semesters, I’ve seen a lot of shortcuts being taken in many different means and several creative methods. But the reality is that I wonder, are we really satisfied with a silly letter when our morals have been heavily compromised? Or maybe the truth is that we pretend we don’t have morals, we lie to ourselves just to get where the world expects us to be.

I feel the pressure just as much as everyone does but I also know that at the end of my life, I want to have led a life of truth and genuine honesty. In many respects, grades matter but once you start going down the slippery slope of compromising your own beliefs, you will gradually find it easier and easier to do what you promised yourself you would never.

We are all worth so much more than that GPA. If you can’t accept that, maybe it’s time to dig deeper and see the bigger picture. If our ultimate goals are to make an impact, I guarantee you that your ethics speak much louder than you think.

As a senior undergraduate, I seek out all opportunities that expand my horizons, with the aim of developing professionally and deepening my vision of how I can positively impact the world around me. While most of my career aims revolve around healthcare and medicine, I enjoy producing content that is informative, engaging, and motivating.  In the past few years, I have immersed myself in the health field through working at a private surgical clinic, refining my skills as a research assistant in both wet-lab and clinical settings, shadowing surgeons in a hospital abroad, serving different communities with health-oriented nonprofits, and currently, exploring the pharmaceutical industry through an internship in clinical operations.  Career goals aside, I place my whole mind and soul in everything that I pursue whether that be interacting with patients in hospice, consistently improving in fitness PR’s, tutoring children in piano, or engaging my creativity through the arts. Given all the individuals that I have yet to learn from and all the opportunities that I have yet to encounter in this journey, I recognize that I have much room and capacity for growth. Her Campus is a platform that challenges me to consistently engage with my community and to simultaneously cultivate self-expression.
