Sliding Scales of Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Like most factors that play into a wholesome life, there seems to be a sliding scale. As summer has happily made its presence known, we are finally able to experience our long-awaited relaxation and rejuvenation. That being said, how much should we push ourselves in the meantime to ensure that our growth is stunted?

I, myself, have currently been struggling and reevaluating my decisions over and over again these last few days. Here are my conclusions to how to get as close to balanced as possible.

1. You find enough time to self-care.

In order to truly be at a good physical state, you need to make sure to set aside time to eat well and exercise a significant amount. For your emotional state, be sure to do one activity a day that serves to calm your soul whether that be meditation or reading a novel or going into nature for a hike.

2. You have been incoporating novel experiences.

A lot of people fall into a habitual routine. If you’re grinding all the time, the chances of stimulating your brain in a different route will be very slim. At the beginning of the month, set aside one goal of a skill you’ve never done before and dive in. Then, at the finality of the month, evaluate and see if you enjoy it and would want to dedicate more time into it.

3. You feel a strong sense of contentment.

If you’re feeling a bit of restlessness, try to consider why. Are you not experiencing enough of life? Are you seeking travel? Are you seeking better relationships? When you’re in a content state, that is a pretty evident indicator that you are doing what you want to feel fulfilled.

4. You are able to make time for the relationships you value.

Since it’s summer, there should not be many excuses to put people on the back -burner anymore. It’s the perfect time to place relationships on the forefront and grow by doing amazing trips, unique projects, or simply enjoying each other’s company.

Happy adventuring!

As a senior undergraduate, I seek out all opportunities that expand my horizons, with the aim of developing professionally and deepening my vision of how I can positively impact the world around me. While most of my career aims revolve around healthcare and medicine, I enjoy producing content that is informative, engaging, and motivating.  In the past few years, I have immersed myself in the health field through working at a private surgical clinic, refining my skills as a research assistant in both wet-lab and clinical settings, shadowing surgeons in a hospital abroad, serving different communities with health-oriented nonprofits, and currently, exploring the pharmaceutical industry through an internship in clinical operations.  Career goals aside, I place my whole mind and soul in everything that I pursue whether that be interacting with patients in hospice, consistently improving in fitness PR’s, tutoring children in piano, or engaging my creativity through the arts. Given all the individuals that I have yet to learn from and all the opportunities that I have yet to encounter in this journey, I recognize that I have much room and capacity for growth. Her Campus is a platform that challenges me to consistently engage with my community and to simultaneously cultivate self-expression.
