Shaky Welcome

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

The semester has official begun and many have already settled in. For those who moved in on the official move in day were welcomed with a powerful jolt that frightened more than one. On Sunday, August 24th at around 3:21 a.m. the Bay Area was struck with a 6.0 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake with the epicenter between Napa and American Canyon caused many damages both physical and psychological.

Berkeley, like many other cities in the Bay felt the strong rattle that awakened the fear that the big one could hit any minute. Living in California one must be aware that earthquakes are normal and one must learn to be prepared. To make things easier we have compiled 5 ways to prepare for an earthquake.

1. Emergency Supplies

After this shaky welcome, you should put together an emergency kit in your dorm room stocked with a flashlight with batteries, a radio, first aid kit, food and water, a set of comfortable clothes, and some glow sticks just in case the power is cut.

2. Disaster Preparedness Plan

It’s important for you and your roommate to create a disaster plan so that panic won’t hit. For example, identify either in your dorm or in the building good places to cover and protect yourself during an earthquake.

3. Locate and figure out if there is a preparedness committee in your community

UC Berkeley and the city of Berkeley have a lot of resources that are available to the public about education on earthquake safety.

4. Keep a pair of sturdy shoes under your bed

During and after an earthquake there is broken glass everywhere. It is important to keep an extra pair of sturdy shoes close to you to protect your feet from any possible cuts.

5. Download this App

Lastly, UC Berkeley has created an app that is downloadable to anyone with a smartphone. The app known as MyQuake “maps earthquakes that are occurring near you and across the globe”. Besides this app we recommend you subscribe to an Earthquake Notification Service. Here is a good one: https://sslearthquake.usgs.gov/ens/
