Keeping the Spark in Long Distance Relationships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

Long Distance Relationships (LDRs) can seem very scary, especially when you’re so used to being around your partner so you have no idea what to expect. If you’re far enough from your Significant Other (SO), the thought of your relationship potentially not working out will haunt you, but just because the situation may be hard doesn’t mean it’s impossible. By simply changing your outlook on the situation and making a few adjustments in your relationship you can definitely keep the love alive!

One thing to remember in LDRs is to communicate as much as possible. Long phone calls, text messages, and video chatting is a great way to keep in contact with your SO and to keep the fire and passion in your relationship. Making time for your SO shouldn’t feel like an obligation, you should want to talk to them!  Make sure you don’t have the same conversations everyday to keep it fun and exciting. Always, let your SO know how much you love, miss, and appreciate them!

Yes, being in an LDR can be difficult and bring strain to the relationship but there is a bright side!  It is much easier to focus on school, work, and also be able to make time for other activities when your SO isn’t always there to (lovingly) distract you. Having your SO around at all times can affect other important things like getting involved on campus and making new friends. LDR’s will allow you to get the most out of your college experience and allow you to find yourself outside of your relationship.

Physically seeing each other is also extremely important. Make sure that you’re making an effort to visit your boyfriend/girlfriend as much as possible. Also, make sure that it is equally convenient for the both of you to make traveling arrangements to see each other. Make the little time you get together special because you don’t see them as much as you’d like. For your relationship to truly work you should communicate, be true to yourself and to your relationship, and be willing to equally put in the work. If you’re both putting in your very best effort, the distance shouldn’t matter because love will keep the relationship alive!
