Let’s take a time machine back to 2011. My 12 year-old self had just gotten a new computer for Christmas and had already surfed the internet, created a Myspace and Facebook account, then was inconveniently bored.
I remember I was sitting on my bed, watching cat videos on YouTube and decided I wanted to start typing the stories I had in my head. My great internet search skills had brought me to Wattpad: a free, user-generated, story writing website. The best thing about it was I could read others’ works and ideas.
Here is my list of my top 5 favorite novels I’ve read, including the description in case you want to read them, too.
1. Puck You– @PeytonNovak
“Grace Gillman and Sebastian Evans have more in common than they think. Not only do they love hockey and live to tear up the ice, but they also hate each other with a passion. More importantly, both Grace and Sebastian are humiliated by the attraction they feel towards one another. After all, you’re not supposed to have the hots for your sworn enemy…
Since tryouts, Sebastian has resented the girl that could threaten his spot as number one player on the hockey team. Grace, on the other hand, can’t stand that her captain is a sexist, arrogant, womanizer.
Can the two teammates make it through the hockey season without killing each other?”
-peytonnovak, “Puck You”
Why you should read it:
Ahhhhhhhhh. As a HUGE hockey fan, I LOVE this one. PeytonNovak has great writing skills, and the character development is amazing.
2. No Capes– @joecool123
“‘Why wear a mask?’ I whispered as my fingers brushed the satin garment that revealed only his enigmatic eyes.
‘No one can find out my real identity,’ He replied, his gaze pouring into mine, ‘Anyone could be behind this mask. Besides, it keeps me safe.’
I held my breath, realizing just what could happen if he left the city. How that would change everything. ‘Okay,’ I continued, letting the cool drizzle of the nighttime air soak my skin, ‘I suppose that’s pretty standard… but why not wear a cape? Don’t superheroes usually wear capes?’
He cracked a boyish grin and took a step away from me, like he’d suddenly inherited a windfall of energy. ‘Nah. Not unless they want a death wish. Capes are hazardous for your health, Madeline.’ He looked me directly in the eyes, and I suspected he was about to divulge his best advice so far. ‘No capes.’”
-joecool123, “No Capes”
Why you should read it:
This novel speaks to my inner superhero-loving soul. joecool123 needs to write more for this story line, but I wouldn’t be upset if she didn’t because I could re-read this novel all day, every day.
3. Best-Friends with Issues– @Prodigywriter9638
“Selena’s life is in shambles.
Isolated by most of her family, witnessing a lifelong friendship crumbling before her eyes, and being torn apart from the boy she fell so idiotically in love with, she doesn’t see how things could get much worse.
But once again, the universe finds uncanny enjoyment in proving her wrong.
On the other end of the spectrum, Conner’s not doing much better.
Like Selena, his family is completely against Conner and his girlfriend’s entire relationship. The only difference being, his family is on the side against him. And as if he wasn’t unlucky enough, Selena’s handsome and foreign almost-ex-boyfriend picked the perfect time to come and pay them a visit.
With more than ever on the line, what started out as harmless fun has morphed into something entirely more heartbreaking.
Even best friends have their issues sometimes, right?”
-Prodigywriter9638, “Best-Friends With Issues”
Why you should read it:
This novel was one of the first that I read. What I love about Wattpad in general is that the writer can choose a cast to put faces to their characters. With an all-star cast of Logan Lerman and Selena Gomez, I fell in love at the start.
4. My Match– @wintersnow13
“[Watty Awards Finalist] When Hanna Moore literally runs into Max Thomas, she never thought that it’d trigger a chain reaction of events that would flip her life upside down, squash it, and run it over with a giant concrete churning truck.
Unexplained events start to happen. People are getting hurt. Old enemies come back, new allies arise, and long-buried secrets threaten to haunt her and the new family she’s found. Will they ever get their happily ever after? Or will the ghosts of her past manage to push her away from her loved ones and Max, her perfect match?”
-wintersnow13, “My Match”
Why you should read it:
Another oldie, but a goodie. As the tide of the Twilight saga swept the nation, I’ll admit I was a little obsessed and started to read werewolf novels on the site and I came across this one. I keep coming back to it because it’s so good.
5. Celebrity Status– @writerbug44
“Holly Thorne has a normal life in Minnesota. Normal friends and family and grades. Her personality may be a little hyper and bubbly, but all in all, she’s normal.
Well, except for the fact that her brother, Jackson Thorne, is the world’s most famous teen actor in Hollywood. He left their family two years ago in Minnesota and ever since then, he’s had nothing but success. So, Holly hasn’t seen her brother in two years, but now, she’s moving in with him for the summer. What she didn’t know about her brother, was that he is best friends with Ryder West. Hollywood’s golden boy, aka Holly’s obsession. She also comes to terms with the fact that not only are they best friends, but Jackson also lives next door to Ryder and his family.
This summer just took a very interesting twist for Holly, Jackson, and the whole West family.”

Why you should read it:
With Bridget Mendler, Kellan Lutz (swoon) and Taylor Lautner (double swoon), this is my favorite piece by writerbug44. It’s another novel that I could read over and over and over.
6. One of the Boys– @knightsrachel
“Samantha Evans. A 17-year old girl in her Senior Year of High School. Stereotype says that she should be worrying about what outfit she’s going to wear and what boy she’s going to date, but Samantha has a different plan. For Samantha, her Senior Year is all about proving that she deserves to be the Quarterback for Westview High School just as much as the next guy. But as the season continues, problems arise and the pressure builds. And it’s all on Sam to bring the Westview Polar Bears to another State Victory, no matter what.”
-knightsrachel, “One of the Boys”
Why you should read it:
It’s only fair to save the best for last. In fact, knightsrachel is my favorite Wattpad writer. She is currently working on a sequel for “One of the Boys” called “One Step at a Time”.
