America’s favorite celebration is back: Halloween is just around the corner. I had never really celebrated Halloween back home, but as soon as I arrived here I realized that this would definitely change.

Halloween slowly creeps over the course of October. CVS and grocery stores’ aisles start getting stocked with family sized packs of the best candies and chocolates. One of the classic, American favorites is the chocolate peanut butter cups; whose orange packaging seems to match perfectly for any Halloween celebrations. Candy also starts appearing at school: in recitations, in class and at security desks.

The second aspect of Halloween, which is the biggest component of this for most, is the the costume. Oh the costume. “What are you dressing up as?” “Where did you get your costume from?” are some of the many questions costume goers get. The most common costume in college is always “sexy-something”: sexy cop, sexy princess, sexy anything. This year, the most popular costumes will probably be Harley Quinn for girls.

The third point, which only applies for college students, is the social parties. BYOs, pre-games, frat parties, darties, downtowns are all starting this weekend, and going to last until next weekend. Some people will wear the same costumes for a week and the really dedicated Halloween fans will have a different one for every single event. Bottom line is Halloween is a time for people in college to become whoever they want for a night and forget all about social stigma or labels, eat candy and have fun.
