To My Younger Sibling,

Thank you for being you. Thank you for providing me with endless laughs, especially when I need them most. Thank you for hugging me every time I come home from college, even though it’s not always cool to hug your older sister. Thank you for being a shoulder to lean on when I need it most. But most of all, thank you for being my best friend.

When you first came home, I’m not going to lie, I was extremely jealous. Going from being an only child to an older sister was a big step, and I was worried that Mom and Dad would ignore me now that you were around. But of course, that never happened and I couldn’t be any happier now that I got over being jealous. I always had someone to play with growing up, and whatever game I was playing I knew you would play along with me. When we went on family vacations, especially those where we were the only kids, I knew I would never be alone and always had someone who would play card games or go for walks with me. Now that we are older, I know I still always have someone who will go get ice cream with me at 8 p.m. or go to concerts with me. I can always count on you to have my back and most of the time, go along with the many schemes I like to create. You truly are my partner in crime.

I know we fight, squabble, and generally get on each other’s nerves. Some days, I swear I could strangle you for being such a pain. But I know even when we’re screaming at each other and ready to fight one another, we’ll get over it. We will find something funny, or will walk away and cool off but will always come back together again. For that, thank you. I can’t think of anyone else who puts up with my random annoyances, gets angry at me, and then is able to get over it so quickly. You prepared me for living with other people and general arguments with friends and partners in school projects.

You are one of the best people I know. I’m sorry that sometimes teachers that I had in high school ask about me or sometimes compare us. You are your own person, an individual who can’t be replaced. I know you will go on to do great things, be a great person, and live a fantastic life. You will find your own path in life, one that I am excited to watch you create and follow. I will be there every step of the way, in both the good and the bad parts.

But most importantly, I want you to know that no one will ever be able to replace you. I might get a significant other, have my own family, or spend more time with my friends, but you will always be number one. I will always be there to protect you and stand up for you. I will always be there in the good times and the bad. I can’t always promise to be the best role model, but I can promise to always try. You are my true other half, and that will never change.

Love,

Your Older Sister
