5 Ways to Reduce Finals Week Stress, As Told By a Freshman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Finals season is upon us, and with that comes the stress of handling approximately 83 exams, 42 papers, and 24 presentations. It’s pretty easy to get lost and overwhelmed in the midst of it all, so here are five tips to make sure you can do your best during this demanding time.

1. Treat Yourself

There’s nothing fun about finals. Nothing. However, one of the ways to make it more bearable is to do things for yourself you wouldn’t normally do. Whether it’s taking that extra mojo cookie, ordering late night study feta bread, taking a 10-minute longer shower than usual, or ubering back from the library because you just don’t feel like walking, do the little things to make yourself happy and reward yourself for how hard you’re working.

2. Work Out

I know it seems like there’s no time to take a break from your day to go to the CCRB or run outside in the Arb, but finding time will help you in the long run. Wake up a little early or go before dinner and give yourself some time to decompress. Especially with the beautiful weather coming up, giving yourself some time outside to relax and unwind will make you so much more productive in the long run.

3. Take a Break

If you can’t take time out of your day to hit the gym, or you really really just hate the gym, make sure you’re still giving yourself breaks. Eat a meal with some friends, watch an episode of TV, or even take a 30-minute nap. Your body and mind will thank you for it.

4. Find Your Spot

One of the amazing things about Michigan is the fact that the campus is Ann Arbor. Between the Ref, the Law Quad, the coffee shops on South U and State street, and everything in between, you’re bound to find a place that’s perfect for you. Find somewhere new to camp out in for finals week as your productive study spot, and feel good knowing that you’ll be getting all your work done somewhere enjoyable.

5. Keep it in Perspective

This is the hardest thing to do when every test and every class feels like the most important thing in the world. However, remember that one grade on one assignment won’t determine your life. Try your hardest and work as hard as you can, but if you get a bad grade on a paper, you get a bad grade on a paper. All you can do is your best!
