Summer Books to be A Well-Read Collegiette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

It’s almost over, Collegiettes! It’s almost that time of the year that means sun, sand, and a little bit more breathing time. But, don’t catch a bad case of the “Summer Brain-Drain.” Instead, read these three awesome books that are great reads, and literature that you can use in your academic life:

  1. The Bell Jar – by Sylvia Plath. Plath is a great American female writer. Native to Massachusetts, this author writes an amazing story about mental illness. While this book shouldn’t be considered a “beach read,” it is a great book to able to reference and have in your repertoire.

  2. Wide Sargasso Sea – by Jean Reas. The “prequel” to Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Jean Reas takes you through the incredible story of Antoinette, a girl living in the Caribbean. The story is an interesting take on power relations. If you liked the basic point of Jane Eyre, you will love this new take on these familiar characters.

  3. This is How You Lose Her – by Junot Diaz. This writer (representing the great state of New Jersey) takes you through a series of short stories that are all connected. This novel is an awesome look at the struggles within relationships (specifically, for men). A great read!

Get reading, Collegiettes!
