Kim’s Thanksgiving Roadtrip Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Tired of the current music on your IPod? Enjoy the end of the fall season with these songs before Christmas jingles take over all the radio stations (something I don’t mind one bit…) and the cold winter months start to move in. It’s always sad to see autumn leave New England. However, here are some tunes to get you through that drive home for Thanksgiving next week!

I Would Do Anything For You – Foster the People
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOIfNyBmZ0g

Remember that upbeat, catchy tune from this summer that went something like this, “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks…” that just made you want to dance? Well, these are the same guys that sing “Pumped Up Kicks” and it turns out, all their other songs are just as catchy as their hit summer anthem. This song is my favorite off their album, but the entire thing is definitely worth checking out!

Lucky Now – Ryan Adams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSyvZXtA0-w

I wish more people knew of Ryan Adams and his beautiful music. I’m a sucker for anything acoustic, and it always seems to remind me of fall. Ryan’s music has been featured in a lot of movies and TV shows, most memorable was his beautiful rendition of Oasis’ “Wonderwall” that played while Ryan and Marissa broke up for the 1,500th time. (OC fans anyone?!) If you’re feeling in the mood for some good acoustic music, definitely download “Lucky Now” and “Wonderwall”. You won’t be disappointed.

The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack – Liars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwhiXr7Xr_Y

If you saw 50/50 recently, you’ll remember this from the heart-wrenching scene when Joseph Gordon Levitt’s character is about to go into surgery (amazing movie by the way, go see it!). I knew I had to download this song right after I heard it.

Don’t Move – Phantogram
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2RlV6cteiA

I randomly stumbled across this song, I’ve never heard of the artist but I love it! It’s so funky and I find myself slightly dancing to it when I’m listening on my IPod and walking to class, which I definitely get some strange looks for. Nonetheless, it’s a fun song; I heard it when I was out this weekend and was pleasantly surprised.

Hurts Like Heaven – Coldplay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCBxdhSbM8o

If you haven’t done so already, go download the new Coldplay album, “Mylo Xyloto”. This isn’t the standard sappy, depressing Coldplay music you may be expecting; it’s so much better. I’m always in awe of the way Coldplay changes their entire sound with each album, yet somehow remains the same. I’m not exaggerating when I say I love every track. “Hurts Like Heaven” just happens to be the first one I fell in love with and it’s a great preview for the rest of the album.

Cigarettes In The Theatre – Two Door Cinema Club
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY3adTQq_EE

Although their EP and album was released a little over a year ago, I just discovered this song. It’s so catchy and immediately makes me want to drive around with a friend, this song blasting and the windows open. While you’re at it, also download “Something Good Can Work,” it’s just as great.

Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra) – Gotye
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY

First thing’s first: watch this video because it’s awesome. When my friend first showed me this song I had it on repeat for a full week and couldn’t get it out of my head. I love the back and forth conversation that happens between the two artists as well as both of their unique voices. This song is very different, but almost everyone I’ve shown it to has fallen in love with it.

Take Care (feat. Rihanna) – Drake
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spRbS3f0NE4

Drake’s new album, “Take Care” is amazing. One of my favorite songs is the one that he collaborated with Rihanna on, which is also named “Take Care”. When is a song that Drake and Rihanna do together not great? See “What’s My Name?” for example. This beat is definitely worth a listen.

Maps – The Front Bottoms
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbT6qUpROnI

I may be biased because these kids went to my high school in Northern Jersey, but I am loving this. Their music video has almost 50,000 hits on Youtube… how cool is that! This song reminds me of the good ‘ol Jerz (it’s not that dirty I promise) and instantly takes me back to high school, but you don’t have to be from New Jersey to appreciate this! It’s a really fun song and I’m excited to see what else these guys come up with. Also, I love the music video; check it out!

Holocene – Bon Iver
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWcyIpul8OE

Bon Iver kills me. I absolutely love Justin Vernon and this song is one of his best, its absolutely gorgeous. Their sophomore album dropped this past summer, do yourself a favor, and buy it immediately. Nothing will ever be able to touch their debut album “For Emma, For Forever Ago” but it comes pretty close and this song is a pretty good indicator of that.

Rivers and Roads – The Head and The Heart
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4jFyOsY54M
This song is so Autumn-y to me. It also reminds me of and makes me want to go home, which seems appropriate, as we are about to leave school for a little break to recuperate.
As you leave UMass next week, listen to this song and smile knowing that you’ll be at home soon with family and friends, enjoying a wonderful Thanksgiving!
