A GIF Story: You Know You’re a HFA Major at UMass When…

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Hey Collegiettes! Are you a member of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at UMass, majoring in something like English, History, Art, Philosophy, Theater, etc.? As a member myself, I think there are without a doubt a ton of experiences all of us HFA students share – so here are just a few of them! You know you’re a HFA Major at UMass when…

You tell someone your major and you probably hear at least one these statements:

“Oh, so you want to be a teacher?”

“Your classes must be so easy!”

“Good luck finding a job when you graduate.”

In fact, you constantly find yourself having to defend your major to others.

Sometimes, you think your major is the best choice you’ve ever made,

But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t drive you completely insane.

You almost never have to endure UMass three hour lab classes,

But come the end of the semester, you’re drowning in papers and projects.

You’ll complain nonstop about how terrible having most of your classes in Bartlett is (‘sup asbestos?).

…but as soon as you hear it’s being torn down, you get angry.

You have to mentally prepare yourself every morning to spend most of your day in DuBois Library.

(If you can survive the wind tunnel you have to walk through to get there.)

You’ve probably spent more money on printing than shopping this semester.

But that pales in comparison to how much you’ve spent on coffee at the Procrastination Station alone.

You’ve peer edited a ton bad papers and projects.

And have handed in some pretty terrible projects yourself.

And finally, you know you’re an HFA major at UMass because despite all of these problems, you know it’s still worth it.

Don’t worry, Collegiettes… any major, as long as it makes you happy, is a worthwhile one!
