Christmas Celebrations: How Early Is Too Early?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Never. That’s the answer to the question in the title. Never. In my opinion, it is never too early to start celebrating for Christmas. Okay, so maybe we shouldn’t get our stockings in a bunch in September, but I’m talking November 1st – let’s get the ball rolling. Where’s the Christmas music? Where’s the lights, the snow and the decorations?

I know what everybody says: “Poor Thanksgiving” and “Don’t forget about Thanksgiving!” Okay well 1) Thanksgiving does not have any feelings so personifying it and feeling bad for it will get us no where and 2) Believe me, I haven’t forgotten. Who could forget about the delicious stuffing my Dad makes extra of every year – Mimi’s recipe. Or the turkey that always takes way longer or is done way earlier than we were planning on eating. Nope, I could never forget Turkey Day and I absolutely love giving thanks to the world around me, but this does not mean I cannot do so with some Bing Crosby Christmas music in the background…

People get all uptight about Christmas music playing early. Listen, people, my apartment was decorated on November 1st for Christmas. This is mainly because we leave on December 10th and we really don’t get to celebrate Christmas at all in Amherst so Demi, Steph and I decided to start early. If I could be listening to Christmas music at all times in my car right now, I would be doing that too (96.1 in your cars for Amherst). I am thankful for commercials like this for now, though…

Before people go all Scrooge on me, let me explain to you why I love to start celebrating early. I don’t get sick of Christmas. I, frankly, do not understand how someone could. I absolutely love giving gifts, sitting by a fire, drinking Peppermint Mochas out of a red Starbucks cup, relaxing in my room with my Balsam and Cedar Yankee Candle lit, watching 24 hours of A Christmas Story on TBS on Christmas Eve, waking up at 6:30am on Christmas day then remembering I’m 21 years old and should probably sleep at least another hour, and the feeling of joy in the air. Cheesy McCheeserson on that last line, yes, but it’s so true.

I will admit there is one thing I dislike about Christmas time. Didn’t see that one coming, did you? That’s when it ends. December 26th is probably my most hated day of the year. It’s so absolutely depressing for Christmas to be over, but we can always find something else to look forward to, I guess…

So, you grinches getting all mad that people are hyped up about Christmas before December hits, pop a candy cane in your mouth and play some Michael Buble. I dare you to TRY not to smile, to feel happiness or excitement for the holidays. You don’t need to give or receive gifts to enjoy Christmas.

For those of you who are like me and have a countdown going until Christmas (12, in case you were wondering), have most of your shopping done and are PUMPED for ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas (Eeeeeeee!!!), we should be friends. After all, “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!”

Now are you excited for Christmas? You’re welcome.

I am a rising senior journalism major, education minor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I've always enjoyed writing and journalism but my career goal is to become an elementary school teacher after I (hopefully) get my masters next year. I love hanging with my family, my puppy brother Charlie, and of course my friends. My friends and I can usually be seen at parties laughing uncontrollably, crying hysterically, and/or dancing like we're in a rap video. Sometimes all at once. It's a good time. My favorite past time is drinking iced coffee and I'm way too obsessed with my iPhone. I work full time in the summers at TPC Boston as a waitress and beverage cart girl. It's pretty ideal. Im super excited to start a life for myself outside of college but if you or anyone you know has a device to slow down time and make senior year last extra, extra long, please contact me. Xo
