Building Your Own Major: The Ins & Outs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

College can be confusing at times, and figuring out what to major in is often the first step in the right direction. However, for many people that are interested in a variety of fields, or feel the desire to pursue niche career goals, picking an established one can be a challenge. Here at UMass, the Bachelor’s Degree with an Individual Concentration program (BDIC) makes those ideas a reality, and there are steps that must be taken to ensure success.

1. Get to know the department.

It’s a good idea to get a feel for what you’re getting into. You can make this program your ultimate pursuit, or create a major to complement another you may have. The BDIC website, as well as many friendly faculty and peer advisors, have a ton of information to help you make an informed decision. Interests vary widely, from fashion merchandising and music management to holistic health and international relations. No matter what you choose, there will be a person to point you in the right direction.

2. Follow through.

Be sure to hand in your application by the deadline so your proposal can be reviewed and you can be accepted into the class! This is the most important step to begin your journey, so make it a personal conquest to do your absolute best in explaining why this path is right for you, and how your proposed concentration differs from other majors on campus.

3. Pass the class.

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but be sure to hand in all of your work by the dates assigned in class. There will be many deadlines for concentration descriptions, class outlines, and sponsor write-ups, so it helps to be organized and proactive. Once all the necessary work has been turned in, it will be reviewed and sent back for any revisions. It’s vital that you make the appropriate changes to improve your final proposal and get it approved in the end.

4. You’ve made it!

Congratulations! Upon being accepted into the department, t-shirts are handed out and you will receive an invitation to a networking event. This event is a great opportunity to look into the world of BDIC alumni, who have put their concentration into action through careers they were accepted into upon graduating. This is your chance to meet with, ask questions, and hear their tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your time with BDIC and UMass as a whole, all while letting your light lead the way.

Creating your own major requires a great deal of personal motivation and planning, but it’s undoubtedly worth every ounce. The staff within the department, combined with the endless array of networking possibilities available, make for an unbeatable swath of resources just waiting to hear from you and help you reach your optimal potential. The BDIC program here at UMass has provided me with an opportunity unlike any other, allowing me to combine the fields I’m passionate about while maintaining a solid backing of classes and support to carry me through these next couple years.
