Why It’s Okay To Be Single During the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

The weather has cooled and the holidays are approaching quickly. If you weren’t already aware, this time is called cuffing season; it’s a time when students try to find someone to spend the chilly winter with. I mean, having someone to take a cute Christmas or New Year’s picture does sound nice to us singles. But there are the many positives of being single during this time of the year.

1. You don’t have to fight about with which family you want to spend the holidays with.

2. Buying hundreds of dollars worth of presents for your man isn’t a stress.

You don’t have to buy a watch or sunglasses that he’ll break or lose within a week.

3. You can treat yourself with all of your Christmas money.

4. No pretending you liked that ugly necklace he got you and having to wear it everyday.

We’ve all been there, don’t lie.

5. No awkward Christmas parties for you!

6. You can spend time just focusing on your family.

7. Less ugly tagged Facebook photos you have to be in.

No logging onto Facebook and seeing that his mom tagged you in a photo where you’re stuffing your face. Very candid, not very attractive.

8. Endless questions about who you’re dating can be answered with a simple “no one”.

9. You can eat whatever you want without feeling self-conscious.

Eating all the pie and cookies you want in the seclusion of your own home is a major plus. No reminders from the peanut gallery that you’re on your eighth cookie.

For all of you who think it’s a tragedy being single for the holidays, I hope you see that these positives outweigh a nice candid in the snow. Cuffing season is really not all that it’s hyped up to be. So stay strong, focus on yourself this winter, and don’t take for granted the perks of being uncuffed.
