Happy #NYFW, blogosphere!

Don’t be discouraged that we are heading into cold weather as the looks from fashion week are primarily pastel colors and dainty springy silhouettes; you can always steal some of the hair and makeup looks! After stalking the Instagram feeds of my favorite designers, watching live videos of the shows and living vicariously through the NYFW Snapchat Story (WHICH IS THE COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN), I’m absolutely thrilled for all of the emerging hair and makeup trends.

The first prominent hair trend I noticed was the naturally-tousled-waves look paired with bold brows. I would like to take this moment to thank the Fashion Goddesses for blessing us with another season of considering bedhead to be fashionable. Messy hair is my absolute favorite look, and clearly designers such as Christian Siriano feel the same way. If you pay attention, you’ll notice that the hair at the Christian Siriano show wasn’t wildly messy, but just slightly disheveled. The hair is almost straight, with just a few waves and curls for volume.

Achieving this look takes a little bit more work than rocking a completely free mane.

  • If your hair is naturally curly or wavy, take a flat iron on a low-heat setting to a few strands. Don’t try to straighten them completely, just tame and shape them. This is a great trick for girls who have a great natural texture to their hair, but could use some primping. For example, my hair has a natural wave to it, but one side of my head always comes out looking crazy. Depending on which side looks best, I’ll either tame the tighter waves or curl the straighter side.
  • If your hair tends to fall flat or is naturally straight, you’re going to want to add some volume for this look. Start out by spritzing some sea salt spray to help create some waves. (My favorite is Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray. I originally bought it because I didn’t feel like spending $30 on the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray I’d heard everyone rave about, and ended up falling in love with it. You can find it at Walgreens, Ulta, Target and even Urban Outfitters.) For some, using sea salt may be enough to achieve the look. If not, take a curling iron with a wide barrel, and carefully add a few waves. As always, make sure to turn the barrel away from your face as you curl to create a windswept look.
  • Regardless of your natural texture, hairspray is key for this look. Before spraying, shake your hair out Beyoncé style. If you’ve only curled a few pieces, you’re going to want to make them blend in with the rest of your hair.

Remember when I told you that colored hair was cool? Well, I was right, DUH. Badgley Mischka took the hair chalk trend to another level by sending their models out with pastel hair and matching eyebrows, and I’m absolutely obsessed! (This is the part where all of my friends reading this are going to make a mental note to convince me not to go out with purple eyebrows this weekend. Good luck, girls.)

Unsurprisingly, braids have been a theme throughout this NYFW. Stylists are constantly finding new ways to braid hair, and it seems as if the effortless and messy trend applies to plaits, too. My absolute favorite braids of the week so far are from the Mara Hoffman show. I am currently dedicating my life to figuring out how to master that braid, so watch this space for updates!

Did you see any hairstyles you just have to master during NYFW? Let me know!
