Meet Gloria Tanui, Future Nurse & World Traveler

I am so lucky to have met Gloria in high school. She is one of the kindest people I know and is such an optimist. I am so lucky to have gotten to be roommates with her this year, it has been such a blast and college would not be the same without her. Keep reading to learn about the things that make Gloria unique!

Hometown: West Des Moines, IA

Major: Nursing Interest with a Chinese minor

Year: Freshman

What made you decide to pursue nursing? “Seeing my mom work as a nurse and seeing her dedication inspired me. I want to help people and feel that nursing gives me the opportunity to do so.”

Is there a specific field within nursing you want to do? 

“I’ve thought about neonatal but that is pretty popular, a lot of people want to go into that field. However, anesthesiology strikes me as intriguing too.”

What made you choose to minor in Chinese? 

“I think the language is beautiful and the culture is unique.” 

What are your goals for the future? 

“I want to visit Kenya. The healthcare system is quite a mess, so I want to go there and help develop a better health care system even if it means just helping one patient.”

What do you like to do in your free time? 

“I like to discover new music and low key love to knit. I also like going to coffee shops.”

Advice for Incoming Students:

“Put yourself out there and know that if you want to have a great time at University of Iowa, you need to put in that effort. Go in with a positive attitude. Don’t be afraid to join groups that fit your interests and know that it’s okay if something isn’t quite as fitting for you.”
