Things That Might Happen if You Studied Abroad this Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

Whether you spent your summer hiking the Swiss Alps, flamenco dancing in Spain, or petting koalas in Australia, coming home is a HUGE adjustment. I’m sure everyone can relate to a few of these…

Everything that was once beautiful at home seems pretty ordinary.

Nature and architecture in the US you used to love now just seem…eh.

“You think Wilbur Cross is a beautiful building? Nothing compared to THE VATICAN”

You’ve already been asked to stop talking about your trip by your friends.

“This one time I was zip-lining in the Alps and…Oh I told you about that already?..Okay…fine”

You’re actually excited to answer the typical, “So what did you do this summer?” question.

For once, a crappy summer job ISN’T the standard.

And you immediately feel guilty talking about your summer when someone tells you about their crappy summer job…

So you always reply- “Well at least you were making money!” because you are absolutely broke with a capital B-R-O-K-E.

Like actually, a $0 bank account balance.

You have to readjust to going to * real * school .

Because let’s be honest, how much of study abroad is really about studying?

You get really excited when you hear a person speaking in the language/accent of your host country.

That random French professor DOES NOT CARE to hear how well you’ve learned to pronounce “crepe.”

You’ve looked through your entire Facebook album from your trip at least 7 times already.

All 800 pictures.

Speaking of which, at least ten people have told you that they “lived vicariously through your pictures all summer.”

Now that you’re back, what do you even have to Instagram anymore?!

TBT’s of your time abroad, that’s what.

You are forever stalking all of your study abroad friends and host family members online and miss them so much.

Wait…American music?

You were so wrapped up in your study abroad bubble that the songs everyone’s complaining are “overplayed” are still pretty new to you. And you aren’t that into them.

“But the Spanish version of Bailando is about a trillion times better than this!”

You may have spent the entire summer being legal to drink, only to be met with an unfortunate reality when you got home.

You mean I can’t order sangria with my lunch?

Tipping 15-20% physically hurts.

But the service is actually decent, so it’s kind of a fair tradeoff.

You’re already planning your next trip back.

Your second home will always have your heart!
