Mending America: A Bargain for Your Ballot

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Arkansas chapter.

My voice makes a difference, and that is always something I have been confident of. When it comes to general elections, most people feel as though they’re losing their voice by screaming amidst a roaring crowd – but it isn’t one voice that makes the difference, it’s the overwhelming voices of many. There are strength in numbers, and the primary problem that so many Americans have today is a lack of motivation to vote because they feel an overwhelming sense of being overshadowed. Here’s a wakeup call:

This is not about you and your voice alone. This is about joining the many and mending the America that we thrive in, suffer in, and live in on a day-to-day basis.

It is so ridiculously frustrating to me to listen to people gripe about President Obama. First of all – I would like to see any of us do a better job. There will always be someone better, someone wiser, and someone more adequate for that position as high and mighty. The bottom line is this: the President of the United States is not shaping America – we are. The vast majority of Americans have so little faith in our country and our President to get off their rears and vote. Sounds harsh, doesn’t it? It is, unfortunately, a harsh reality.

This is not, however, always the case. Several people simply are left unaware of the voting process or kept in the dark regarding hot issues. Personally, I never liked to discuss politics growing up – not because I hated it, but because I knew so little. I was afraid to voice any sort of opinion in fear of someone pointing out how ridiculous I sounded. If this is you, please do not feel left out! Take one of these steps to help yourself get in the know on today’s politics:

  • Talk with a friend about their views regarding X, Y and Z. This will enable you to more easily form your own opinions about these topics when they are pitted against someone else’s.
  • Enroll into a Political Science course. There are several of these on campus! Take a class as an elective and immerse yourself in the political world by being surrounded by Political Science majors – believe me, they would LOVE to share their opinions with you!
  • Watch the news once a week. Sit down, chill out and turn on the national news channel for an hour each night – see what you find out and what sort of opinions you form. This will make you much more confident in sharing your knowledge!

Don’t be afraid to vote! Your opinion matters! Get in the know and join forces with the rest of America in changing the path of our nation – and most importantly, get your friends involved. Don’t let elections suck you in and make you feel obligated to vote for what is popular – vote for what is smart, and vote for America.
