Coffee Culture in the Big Easy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Mmm, coffeeeeee! Just typing the six-letter word makes my mouth water and my heart skip a beat. If you’re as coffee crazed as I am, you’ll know that there are hundreds of awesome coffee shops around NOLA that put Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts to shame. The great atmospheres coupled with the fantastic people-watching make a Saturday afternoon go by like nothin’, not to mention the awesome latte you’re sippin’ on! Here are a few of my fave’s (in no particular order) to spend time at.

  1. Mojo Coffee House– Located on Freret Street just a few blocks from campus, this cafe is definitely my friend’s and my favorite place to study, read a good book, or spend some quality time together. Their iced latte is insanely good, and is given to you in a mason jar…does it get any better than that? NO. If you’re not feeling a shot of caffeine, the sparkling elderflower lemonade (yes, this is a real thing) is nothing like I’ve ever tasted before. Get it, #plz.

  2. Cafe Luna– On the corner of Magazine and Nashville, this awesome spot is the perfect bike-ride away quest for a great cup of joe. The ambiance is exactly what you want a cafe to be; inside of a very old and very beautiful southern-style house with an awesome outdoor porch for drinking a hot vanilla chai latte (a definite must-have,) you won’t be able to wipe the smile stuck on your face.

  3. Zotz– Definitely a different vibe from the two above, this coffee shop is one of a kind. There is a certain spooky sensation that engulfs you as you sip your cafe au lait and admire the velvet-and-skull decor, but there’s something about the evil eye mirror that makes this place awesome. You can find it while wandering down the very alternative Oak St, next to a cool thrift store called GLUE. Hipster heaven? I think yes.

  4. Pulp and Grind– If you find yourself in the business district one afternoon admiring the different galleries, you must stop here for a drink. It’s trendy, the location is fantastic (Camp Street) and the coffee…well, let’s just say you’ll be dreaming about it for a few weeks after.

  5. Cafe Envie– My last pick, this coffee shop is unlike any place I’ve ever been to. For those of us who are under 21, the different kinds of  latte’s and tea’s are super delicious…but for the 21 and uppers who like a shot of whisky in their morning dark roast, this is the spot for you. Because this place is a block away from Frenchmen Street, you will 100% run into a few fascinating people, but that’s what put this cafe on my list…the people watching! If you’re spending the day in the Quarter, you must take a pit stop here.

The coffee culture in NOLA is stronger than a nice cup of black coffee, but I’m only scraping the surface with this list. A love for coffee is a good love, and I hope you go on your own adventures to find the perfect coffee shop for you. :)
