Meet Candace Ross, Co-President of the African American Women’s Association and be sure to attend “Hair Affair” this Sunday, April 27th.
Where are you from? Born in Long Beach, CA but I have been living in New Orleans since 2005.
What year are you? Junior
Major? Political Science and Digital Media Production
How did you get involved with the African American Women’s Society? I heard about AAWS from a friend who was a member, so I started going to meetings my sophomore year. I loved the people and the sense of community, which led me to get more involved, and now I’m Co-President!
Tell us about “Hair Affair” and why we should go! Hair Affair is an amazing FREE event, that celebrates all styles, textures, and colors of hair, particularly among the African American community. Each guest receives a gift bag filled with products (Chi, Shea Moisture, Miss Jessie’s and more!). We have also invited hairstylists who will give free consultations. Our guest speaker is Benardett K. Jno-Finn, founder of Senica Naturals, a natural skin and hair care line company. Benardett will give a talk about hair and self-acceptance, followed by a demonstration of products we can make at home with natural ingredients. Guests also have a chance to win some great gift sets at our raffle, from brands like Mixed Chicks, Burt’s Bees, and more. All of the raffle proceeds and donations will be donated to the New Orleans Women’s Shelter. After our guest speaker finishes, guests will enjoy a free delicious dinner.

What’s the best part about being a member of the African American Women’s Society? The best part of being in AAWS is the sense of community in each meeting. We’re an organization, but each new member is more like a friend. Our meetings are filled with lots of laughter, stories, and conversations about being an African-American women at Tulane. It’s a safe space for us to talk about anything.
What’s the best part about being a student at Tulane? The best part about being at Tulane is the food and the city of New Orleans! There’s always some new restaurant I want to try or a neighborhood I’d like to explore.
Hair Affair is this Sunday, April 27, from 2-4pm in Goldring-Woldenberg 1, Room 131
