5 Best Resources for Photo Editing that Aren’t Photoshop

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tulane chapter.

Let’s be real, if you actually want to be serious about graphic design you need to suck it up and buy photoshop/illustrator or pay for the creative cloud every month, there’s just no way around it. However, there is still hope for people who don’t want to cough up the big bucks but still want to impress their social media followers with how cool text looks on top of their soy lattes on Saturday mornings. ~serenity~. Here’s the 5 best websites/apps for the designer in you that just needs to be let out with overlayed geometric shapes and quotes in lobster font.

1. Befunky.com

Befunky most closely resembles actual photoshop with great features like complex text editing and friendly history memory *the undo button* while providing an extremely aesthetically pleasing website that will make you feel like you can start your own design website with a name like Cinnamon Buns and Tutus or Triangles and Squares. People who stalk hand written fonts on the internet, you know what I’m sayin. Furthermore, there are an insane amount of party and wedding invitation templates, perfect for the lonely 33 year old cat lady with an overactive wedding pinterest board.

2. Canva.com

Though less complex than befunky, canva is hands down the website I recommend most to those who just want to put some cool text on a picture and call it a day. Furthermore, canva has the widest selection of text templates of any resources on this list, and is perfect for any sorority member who just attended their first mixer and ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO PUT GREEK LETTERS ON THIS INSTAGRAM SO THAT EVERYONE FROM HIGH SCHOOL CAN SEE THAT I BELONG IN COLLEGE OK I MADE FRIENDS I HAVE FRIENDS LOOK AT THEM!!!!!!!! Yw Darby for using this picture once again to illustrate a Canva tutorial.

3. Dafont.com

Dafont, though less aesthetically appealing than any of the resource on this list, is the nitty gritty birth place of every free font on the internet. Whether you’re looking for trendy, western, futuristic, or dingbats (not quite sure what this section means????) you will find the font you are searching for, if not the second best (FREE!!) option.

4. Over

Switching gears from macbook to iphone, Over is the perfect app for simplistic and uncomplicated photo editing. With minimal options for text/shapes/editing, Over simplifies the sometimes agonizingly long process of getting the picture ~*just right*~. See here a picture of a giraffe I took yesterday at the zoo and the first font option on Over. Ily forever, Over.

5. Studio

Studio, another photo editing app, offers a more complex phone editing experience for the more determined amateur graphic artist. With a million more options than Over, Studio is my personal go to when it comes to more unique photos. Though the app is sensitive to bigger thumbs and has a relentless undo button, the font templates are on par with options in the creative cloud and are much more original than most apps. 5 stars, 11/10.
