A Guide to Vegetarian Restaurants in the Boston Area

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tufts chapter.

As two vegans in the Boston area, we’ve tried all of the vegetarian eateries and rave about plenty of them. This guide is designed to help you find delicious veggie restaurants for any and every kind of craving. Whatever you’re seeking, we’ve got you covered.

Go-to Restaurant: Red Lentil

Our number one choice is definitely Red Lentil. Perfect for a night out with the girls, Red Lentil allows you to share tons of delicious appetizers. From nachos to the signature dish, Gobi Manchurian (fried cauliflower with Indian seasonings), Red Lentil takes the cake for serving all kinds of cuisines. We tried the Thai peanut noodle salad, the soup of the day, and the smoothies – we were not disappointed. Can’t wait to take our friends here!

Nearest T stop: Harvard

Artsy Café: Life Alive

The food at Live Alive is amazing and incredibly healthy. All of the dishes incorporate leafy greens and other plant-based ingredients that taste great and give you what seems like a lifetime supply of nutrients. The dishes either come in whole-wheat wraps or as salads. Our favorites are the Udon Noodle Miso Soup Bowl and the Green Goddess Wrap with added avocado. Don’t forget to try the smoothies and sit downstairs! As nice as the upper level is, the downstairs area has a really nice atmosphere with lots of couches and cool tables.

Nearest T stop: Central

Asian Restaurant: My Thai Vegan Café

My Thai Vegan Café takes the prize for best Asian-vegetarian restaurant in Boston. We absolutely fell in love with this place and their pad see-ew noodles. The menu is seriously huge and has just about every typical Asian meat dish in vegetarian form. We highly recommend the Sweet and Sour “Chicken.” As heavenly as the main courses are, save room for the dessert — best vegan chocolate cake we’ve ever had!

Nearest T stop: Downtown Crossing, then the Orange Line to Chinatown

Fine Dining: True Bistro

True Bistro is a bit pricey – so when we went, we shared an appetizer, an entrée, a side dish, and a dessert. The meal started off with warm bread and olive oil, which was amazing coming from typical meals at Carm and Dewick. Every single dish we ordered was mind-blowing. Our favorites were the pesto fettuccini with cashew cheese and the flourless chocolate cake with caramel and coconut cream. So many other dishes on the menu sounded amazing, and we absolutely cannot wait to go back to try everything else!

Dessert Place: FoMu

To all vegans, lactose intolerants, and ice cream lovers, look no further. FoMu is a dairy-free ice cream shop in Boston. The flavor list is really extensive and ranges from chocolate pudding to salted caramel to rosewater-saffron. Not only are the flavors amazing, but the toppings are as well. The hot fudge is literally unbelievable. FoMu even has pints for sale to take back to your dorm. The ice cream has a coconut base so people with nut allergies can have some, too.

Nearest T stop: Allston Street stop on the Green Line

Hopefully this helps all you herbivores and veg-friendly omnivores in finding delicious vegetarian restaurants in the Boston area. Enjoy!
