What to Wear for Formal Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Trinity chapter.

It’s Formal Season (warmly referred to as formal szn) and it seems like every major organization is having a formal this weekend.  If you’re #struggling on who to take, maybe take a friend (because sometimes, GNO is a lot more fun than worrying if your date is bored or not.)

When it comes to what to wear, you don’t have to be totally conservative.  If you feel like you look good, then anything goes.  Think: a little saucier than a cocktail dress you would wear to a wedding or something like that.

Reminders:

  • Don’t forget to take pictures beforehand. Pictures at the formal will be great, but odds are you might be looking a little dazed if you’re drinking, so make sure there are sober options, too!
  • Don’t go for an updo.  Updos are a lot of work and will likely get messed up throughout the night.  Also, prom vibes, and who really wants to relive prom?  Cringe.
  • If your date doesn’t know anyone, don’t ditch him/her.  You invited them and they came to be with you, so hang out with them!
  • The best places to shop: online.  Your best bet is probably online, Lulus, Tobi, Revolve, Shopbop, etc.  Also the deals of CyberMonday are still going strong so get going!  Don’t spend a lot of money on a dress, you’re probs going to be drinking and if you spill your vodka cran on your brand new $500 dress, you will drunk cry and your mascara is too nice for it to be running down your face.
  • The best places to shop: WeHa.  Hit the Westfarms (Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom, Forever 21, Lord & Taylor, etc.) or some of the boutiques in Blue Back!

Senior Snowball

Senior Snowball is one of the most anticipated events for seniors.  Seniors get to reconnect with their freshmen dormmates – basically you get to pregame with the og friends, where everyone rehashes the memz of freshmen year. The Senior Snowball is Friday, December 2nd.  Remember that most of these “formals” are really semi-formal or cocktail attire.

Winter Formal

The Winter Formal, sponsored by the Bantam Network, is Friday, December 9th, at 5:30 in the Rittenberg Lounge.  All grades are welcome.  There’s music, dancing, refreshments, and a photo booth!  Attire: semi-formal

Greek/Sports Formals

Depending on where the formal is being held, it might be more on the semi side of semi-formal than the formal side.  In any case, go for a short dress (long is so hard to dance in.)  For shoes, go for a chunky heel or a strappy sandal – something you can actually walk in.  If it’s not even your formal – don’t stress about getting a dress!  Borrow from a friend if you must!

And the shoes!
