Healthier You: 10 tips for beginning a healthy lifestyle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Towson chapter.

Being healthier means different things to different people, it comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether it is cutting junk food out completely or just eating and exercising in moderation, we all have an idea of what being healthier means to us. I find in college, it is much harder to be healthier. With all the partying, greasy foods and staying up until late hours of the night, being healthy is no easy task. However, it can be made easier with the right motivation and tips. I have come up with 10 tips that I find to be helpful on my movement to become a healthier me. Comment down below if you find these tips helpful and feel free to share if you have any tips of your own.

1.       Define what being healthy means to you:  Like I said before, being healthy means different things to different people. You do not have to give up junk food completely if you don’t want to. It is important to find a balance in what you want, so you will have more motivation to be healthier. Remember being healthier shouldn’t feel like a chore or super stressful, so only do what you are the most comfortable with.

2.       Make a goals list: Making a list of what you want to accomplish is helpful. This sort of goes hand in hand to defining what being healthy means to you. Do not feel pressured, only write down what goals you want to accomplish, not those you don’t. Some examples could be having an 8 minute mile, being able to climb to the top of the rock climbing wall, or drink eight glasses of water a day.

3.       Plan: Some people find that it can be stressful. Meal planning and exercise can take up a lot of time. But if you plan time into your schedule it can be a lot easier. Meal planning is simple because you prep all your meals in one day, and eat them throughout the week. This way you know what your meals are and spend less time cooking. Check out this website for tips and help on meal planning.

4.       Start small: I find doing one thing different each day makes a big difference. Start small and work your way up. You do not have to do everything at once.

5.       Learn how to read nutrition labels: Reading nutrition labels can help. Things that claim to be healthy may not always be. Check out this website to learn more about it.

6.       Make a motivation board: Whether you use pinterest or cut out inspirational quotes and put them on a memory board, motivation is what really keeps you going. Anything you find inspirational, motivational or important, add to your board.

7.       Stay positive: Remember a lot of your goals won’t be reached overnight, so reamining positive and remembering that you will get there eventually is important.

8.       Create a routine: If you plan to exercise, making a routine is important. Whether you start out with stretches, run, or do yoga, creating an easy and fun routine can help you reach your goals.

9.       Make a playlist: If you are like me and cannot exercise without music then Spotify is a lifesaver. It is free, and you can add any songs you want. Spotify also offers running playlists that you can listen to. Nothing is better than working out to good music.

Stay confident: Being confident in yourself and your abilities is important. Do what makes you happy and follow it. If you aren’t happy with something, change it.
