5 Foods That Look Gross but Taste Amazing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Towson chapter.

You’re in the grocery store just strolling along, when suddenly you see the aisle. You know what I’m talking about: the aisle where wheat and dairy are nowhere to be found and the majority of products are packaged in greenish, brownish eco-friendly material? Sometimes recycled palm leaves?  Dreadlock-sporting hippies salivate from the thought of this part of the store; while others do everything they can to avoid it. If you relate more so to group B, my hope is that after reading this article your initial gawk will be followed by a second glance. Sure, these products look nasty at first glance, but their exotic tastes and nourishing properties seriously compensate for their aesthetic appeal.

#1 Figs

Gross: Looks like a human organ cut in half.

Amazing: Figs are a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps control blood pressure.

#2 Ginger

Gross: Have you ever googled “The Tree Man of Java”?

Amazing: Grated, juiced, sliced, or crystallized, this botanical is proven to help soothe an upset stomach and inhibit rhinovirus, which can cause the common cold.

#3 Passion Fruit

Gross: Comparable to a bowl of raisins in snot.

Amazing: This fruit fulfills about 43% of our daily need of Vitamin A. It also contains a high amount of Vitamin C, iron and copper. These antioxidants help protect the mucous membranes that shield the cornea of the eye, which, as a result improves vision.

#4 Cottage Cheese

Gross: Cellulite. There! I said it.

Amazing: Cottage cheese contains all the essential amino acids needed for it to qualify as a complete protein. Your body normally digests protein at a much slower rate, providing a noticeably longer “full” feeling. This dairy product also increases growth hormone levels that have been associated with fat loss and muscle gain.

#5 Noni

Gross: Is it just me or are those a bunch of eyeballs staring right back at me?

Amazing: Noni is an immune system booster that stimulates melatonin and serotonin. Keeping these hormones balanced is vital as they play a significant role in your mood and your sleep cycle. Not only will a cup of this juice help you feel rested, it can help keep that smile on your face throughout the day.
