‘Honey, I’m Home’: 3 Homemade Beauty Product Recipes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

You know what they say—home is where the heart is; and the best beauty products are “home” made. Let’s face it ladies: We’re always looking for the next best thing when it comes to our beauty products. The only thing about that is the price. Sometimes those $20+ hair products aren’t worth it.

The majority of time, the products we pay pretty pennies for are conceivably those that are drenched in hair-damaging ingredients like alcohol and detergents. Often the skin products we pay for aren’t either – such as lip balms and moisturizers. There are plenty of products out there that aren’t on the “bad guy squad,” but if you can save some money, cut out a huge portion of those bad ingredients and have fun while doing so, count me in.

The good news is that there are hundreds of DIY beauty recipes to choose from. Of the many out there, one has a sweet key ingredient—one that we use for our teas and buns—and that ladies, is honey.

The honey-avocado invigorating and revitalizing hair treatment works great on damaged and dry hair. To create this concoction, you’ll need just two things!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 teaspoons of honey
  • 1 soft, ripe avocado (peeled and stoned)

The oil in the avocado helps moisturize dry, damaged hair, while the honey contains loads of minerals and vitamins, and also attracts moisture.  Mash the ingredients together in a container of your choice, and then massage it into your scalp. Let your hair treatment marinate for approximately 20-30 minutes underneath a shower cap. Afterwards, rinse and style your hair for your day.

Honey is also great for your skin. Since honey is naturally antibacterial, it can help treat and prevent any mild acne. The antioxidants found in honey help prevent the free radicals that are responsible for aging, while also creating healthy and beautiful skin.

Not only is honey great for the skin, salt is too! Salt helps detoxify the skin while removing the microscopic dirt inside your pours. Try a sweet acne scrub for those unwanted pimples we all hate!

INGEDIENTS

  • 2 teaspoons of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

Just mix these ingredients together to create your own acne scrub!

It’s that time of the season where lip balms are crucial to your all-day exposure to the bitter cold. Winter is quickly approaching—the time of year when you buy five lip balms on Monday, but lose four of them by Friday.

Have no fear because yet again, honey can be used to make homemade lip balm. To make lump sums of your very own lip balm, you’ll need just a few key ingredients.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon of honey
  • ¾ teaspoon of beeswax
  • ½ teaspoon of cocoa butter
  • Your special choice of any flavored oil
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

Mix the ingredients and melt them into a pan for two to three minutes. Once the components melt to a smooth consistency, pour your balm into a fancy container of your choice for the finishing touch.

Honey can be used as a component in most beauty recipes. There are plenty of homemade recipes that’ll do just the trick for you with a little bit of time, but with whole lot of fun. Try these beauty recipes and see how great your homemade products turn out.
