Education Column: Why I Chose To Be An Educator

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Coming from a family full of professionals, with not a single elementary school teacher, I decided to form my own path.

Although I was unsure about what this major entailed and what I was getting myself into, I shoved the fears aside and took my first step into the best profession ever. I did not have anyone to turn to because nobody understood the classes, assignments, and really anything I had to do.

Everyone had mixed opinions when it came to teachers; either people thought it was an easy job, or people said it was rewarding – I believed in the latter.

Education is one of the most important parts of a functioning society and is a key component of being individuals. What really drove me to this profession was the fact that I would be able to mold students and have such a large influence and impact on their lives. Although that is a scary thought, it is actually what motivates me to keep working harder and self reflect.

For me, education has always been a way to give back and make a difference. Whether it is by making strong relationships with the students, seeing immense progress in student and self-growth, or when a student finally understands something, it all adds up to the reasons that made me choose being an educator.

It’s for all the hugs, “thank you”, and light bulbs that go off that truly make teaching worth it. Everyday is exhausting and the amount of work that goes into each day is stressful, but I try to focus on the reasons why I chose this as my future profession.

This past year through practicum and student teaching, I have really seen myself grow as a future educator. Whether it is through exploring my creativity with lessons, staying organized, creating units, decorating doors and bulletin boards, or helping in as many ways as possible I never knew I would be able to do all the things I have seen my mentors do. I am excited to see my childhood dream become a reality.
