The Interview Movie – Why the Controversy?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

If any of you lovely readers haven’t watched The Interview trailer before reading this article, I suggest you do so. Here’s the youtube trailer to get you started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP8O-MOqmcw

Anyway, now that you’ve watched that, there is a LOT of controversy surrounding this film, which will be released this Christmas. Why, you may ask? Well, North Korean leadership has said that the release of the film would constitute a declaration of war. According to the Huffington Post (the BBC hasn’t said anything about it), the executive director for the Centre for North Korea-US Peace was dismissive of the plot, and criticized the film in general. According to E! News, spokespeople for the North Korean Military and Kim Jong-Un himself respectively have said that the film is an act of terrorism and war, but that the leader will probably watch it anyway. Seth Rogan tweeted that he hopes Kim likes the movie.

As for my personal opinion, North Korea has made threats in the past, but has never really followed through. So, I doubt that anything will happen as a result of this movie being released. To me, the film itself does not look all that funny, it just looks…weird.
