A Battle of the Chick Flicks! The Vow vs. This Means War

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

With so many good movies out right now, sometimes it’s hard to choose which one to see. We narrowed it down to two. These are two very popular movie choices for college girls right now. The Vow is a love story intertwined with heartbreak and tragedy. This Means War is a rom-com about two men going after the same woman. We all know going out to the movies a lot with friends can be quite expensive, so here’s a little guide to help you choose which movie to see next time you venture down Tremont to the AMC Loews Theater.

Plot Summaries:

The Vow– Husband and wife, Leo (Channing Tatum) and Paige (Rachel McAdams), get into a car accident that leaves Paige without the memory of recent years. The last thing she is able to remember was a time when she was engaged to her ex fiancée and still living with her family, who, in actuality, she had been disconnected from. Leo has to compete with Paige’s family and ex-fiancée (both of whom Paige had not spoken to in years) for time with his wife. This makes for a very difficult time winning her heart back again. The Vow is loosely based off an incredible true story of the struggles of tragedy and the power of love.

This Means War –Two assassins and long time friends, FDR (Chris Pine) and Tuck (Tom Hardy), meet the same woman (Reese Witherspoon) and completely fall for her. When they find out they are pining for the same girl, they decide to let her choose which one she wants. Meanwhile, they are both using their CIA tools to spy on each other’s dates while attempting to sabotage them.

The Actors:

The Vow- Channing Tatum What girl doesn’t love Channing Tatum? Ever since he danced his way into our hearts in Step Up, he’s been a Hollywood heartthrob. He is absolutely perfect for this movie too. Channing Tatum makes you fall in love with him, even if his wife can’t figure out how. Honestly, if your trying to decide if you want to see this or not.. you should, just to watch him for 2 hours.

This Means War- Chris Pine AND Tom Hardy What a struggle it must be for poor Reese Witherspoon to choose between the beautiful, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy in this action filled romantic comedy. Chris Pine is not only known for his role as Captain Kirk in Star Trek, but also, of course, for having one of the nicest sets of eyes in Hollywood. The other man in This Means War is Tom Hardy, best known for his role in Inception Tom Hardy is also British, enough said.

The Actresses:

The Vow: Rachel McAdams Rachel McAdams is one of the best actresses for chick-flicks. From Mean Girls, to The Notebook, to Midnight in Paris, Rachel McAdams can do it all. She has the unique ability to make just about everyone fall in love with her. The passion she eminates on screen, leads viewers to break out the tissues everytime she faces heartache. The acting was definitely a huge plus in this movie, especially that of Rachel McAdams.

This Means War: Reese Witherspoon and Chelsea Handler Reese Witherspoon’s character, Lauren, and Chelsea Handler’s character, Trish, are BFF’s in this movie. Trish is Lauren’s go to girl for advice. Their hilarious conversations, which are actually ad-libbed some of the time, as well as the advice Trish gives Lauren, definately make the movie. These two actresses play huge roles in the success of this movie, and definately bring a lot of humor to This Means War.

My Personal Reviews:

The Vow- To me, The Vow was way too hyped up. I bought my ticket days in advance, and counted down the minutes until I went to see it on Friday, February 10th, the day of the premiere. I was expecting to see one of the best love movies of all time, and cry my eyes out. I actually didn’t even shed a tear. The acting was great, and the main storyline was interesting, but the ending was awful and the storyline just didn’t have much substance. However, I did spend the entire movie staring at Channing Tatum, so that was a plus.

This Means War- On a spur of the moment descision, I went to the movies and saw This Means War. I had seen a few trailers for it, but I wasn’t really expecting to go see it. I’m so glad I did, though. It was definitely one of my favorite movies I’ve seen in a long time. It was a great love story, not completely predictable, and absolutely hysterical.

My pick: You should see This Means War!
